hi all,

i'm going to be building myself a new system here soon. i've never built a system from scratch before, but i think i can handle it. anyway, here's what i got so far:
MOTHERBOARD: IWill KA-266-R RAID $165.00
from Newegg.com

CD-R/RW: Plextor 16x/10x/40x Internal EIDE $215.00
from Newegg.com

HARD DRIVE(S): (3) Maxtor EIDE 40 GB 7200 rps $405.00
from Newegg.com

SOUND CARD: SB Live 5.1 Platinum Box $170.00
from Newegg.com

CPU: AMD 1.2 T-Bird 266 fsb
$233.00
from Atacom.com

DVD/CD-ROM: Pioneer 16x DVD $73.00
from Essencom.com

VIDEO CARD: Elsa Gladiac GEForce 2 Ultra w/ 64 Megs DDR $395.00
from Essencom.com

MEMORY: (2) 256 MB sticks of Crucial DDR 1600 RAM $218.00
from Essencom.com

MONITOR: Samsung 900NF 19" Monitor $369.00
from Emscomputing.com

i also need a case. can anyone suggest the best case possible? one w/ lots of room for expansion and easy to open and get into... is there anything else i would need? fans usually come w/ cases, correct? do i need any other fans? is there anything else i need to install the cpu, i've heard i need some thermal stuff to put on it. any help is much appreciated, thanks

I like the Supermicro or Addtronics full tower cases but you could try the Cases forum for other suggestions. You need a heatsink fan, check reviews or the cooling forum, for that bare processor and maybe Artic Silver thermal compound. You might give the Phillips sound card a look.

I'm wondering if you somehow plan on raiding all 3 of those HDs together? From what i can gather, u can only raid 2 on each controller. If you had 4 drives, you could make 2 80gb raid 0 partitions or something, but I dont think you can make 1 large 120gb partition

First of all, I've heard that pc1600 crucial ram can run pc2100 (133fsb) no sweat. Also, isnt that ram cheaper shipped direct (with free 2 day shipping) from crucial? jesus 3 40gig 7200rpm HDs, what are u gonna do with those.

otherwise looks nice, 128mb of crucial pc2100 is available by the way, but dont know if it is in stock now

Your ultra is cheaper at buy.com.

Don't get a 1.2 266 fsb...just get a 1.2 200 fsb TB (which are factory unlocked) and start with a multiplier of 8.5-9 x 133 fsb and then work your way up. It's a little more flexible for OC'ing and cheaper.

Get an Enlight 7237 case. It has a good fan already in it and for me at least has plenty of room. With all that really sweet stuff you want to put it in, you should prolly get at least another fan for the case though.

your going to need a good heatsink, I think the thermaltake volcano II is the best deal, good cooling with less noise. Check out Tom 's Hardware Cooler roundup. In fact with all the stuff in this system, your going to need lots of cooling which yields lots of noise. I suggest you check the case fans for noise and replace the loud ones with quieter types, I like the the ones out of AT power supplies, they sweet and quiet. I've got a panafli? (spelling?).
