Well, if you are buying PC2700 ram, you should get a motherboard that "officially" supports it. The 845E chipset only "officially" supports PC2100, while the 845PE supports the ram you are buying.

If you want to stay with a MSI motherboard you should get the MSI 845PE MAX INTEL 845PE CHIPSET ULTRA for $95.23.

And lastly, I would get INTEL PENTIUM 4 2.4B GHZ (BX80532PE2400D) W/512K CACHE 533MHZ 478-PIN RETAILED (3 YEARS WARRANTY) for $202.46 and get a bigger hard drive like the WD 80GB 800JB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/66-100 8.9MS 7200RPM 8MB BUFFER (Bare drive w/3-yr warranty) for $108.00.

It has an 8mb buffer, and gives you 80 GB, instead of the smaller 40 GB hard drive you had picked out. You will not notice any speed difference going from a 2.53 Ghz CPU to a 2.4 Ghz. They are both 533 Mhz FSB

The rest looks pretty good.

You might want to see if you could step up the wattage on your power supply. What you're building is somewhat similar to what I have and I wish I had a bit more power. (I'm using an Antec 350W smart PS). If I had it to do over again, I would have went 400 watts or better. Those P4's are power hungry and the extra wattage will help future proof your purchase.

Why are you buying a 845E motheboard when you can just as easily get Anandtech's top pick for best overclocking 845PE motherboard for $74?:\ And $89 for 40gb is too much:Q Go to Fry's and get their 80gb deeal for $89. Not 8buffer though only 2. Buy they do have 120gb 8buffer for $99 AR. And why the combo drive with so many open bays?

Couple of things I guess. Newegg and Googlegear have better CPU prices than Mwave. I would get a P4 2.4B for ~ $190 from either of those two places and save $60. Any overclocking plans? MSI is not a great board if you are.

You're paying too much for your HD and CPU. Googlegear sells the 2.53GHz P4 for $232, and the 2.4 GHz P4 is even cheaper. If you plan on overclocking, get the 2.4GHz P4, a good 845PE motherboard, and a more powerful PSU. You can find an ATA/100 80GB 7200rpm for $90 at many places. If your going to spend $150 on PC2700, you might as well go with Corsair XMS PC2700(CAS Latency 2). Googlegear sells it for $161. Is this system pre-built at Mwave? If it isn't, you could save a lot of money by shopping around for the best prices.

i don't think he'll save anything by shopping from other places...the reason he's probably getting everything from mwave is to save on shipping...he can pick everything up for $5 instead of paying shipping for every single item from someplace like newegg. i buy alot of my stuff from mwave because with store pickup the prices are essential the same as what you would get at googlegear and newegg if you buy in bulk like the guy is doing here...

but yeah i think your system looks good...ditto on the motherboard thing though, either buy ddr2100 or buy an intel board that supports your pc2700
i'd get a bigger psu too...at least a 350W..the ati 9500 is a good choice...performance is on par with ti4600

the system is up and now installing W2K. I changed the Mobo to an 845PE mobo from gigabyte and got an 80GB hdd (WD - how did I not see the price for this drive) and I got an Intel Nic.

So far so good.. i wil be back if we run into trouble.
