building new system, any incompatibilities here?

I'm building a new system for my family, mainly for my brother, so it'll be used for games quite a bit, so I basically want a value gaming system. I habitually started looking at durons and athlons, but now that I think about it, I want the least potential compatibility problems, like the bugs VIA chipsets have had, ATI video card problems, etc. price differences between amd and intel don't seem too big anymore, so it'll be worth it if I'd get fewer problems with intel (I'm at college, so if they have a computer problem I won't be able to fix it)

I have about $1,000 to work with, and my family doesn't need anything fancy like klipsch speakers or a giant monitor. so I'm thinking amd/intel processor around 1ghz, geforce2, 17" monitor, don't know which motherboard.

my concern here is the video card...my brother plays a lot of games, but he's not hardcore about getting the newest games, so I'd think a geforce2 would be good for most games up until 2001 (it's still a huge improvement over the current 2meg ati mach64)

any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. thanks!

I just built this system for a friend and it came out to ~$800 not including monitor, keyboard & mouse.

Soyo Dragon Plus (KT266A chipset)
AMD Duron 1.0Ghz (this has the new Morgon core) - OC'ed to 266MHz FSB
256MB PC2100 Crucial DDR RAM
PNY GeForce 3 Ti 200
Seagate Barracudda IV 40GB
Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM
LiteOn 24x CD-RW
TEAC Floppy Drive
Antec SX1030 Case w/ 300w PSU

I set it up so he's using the onboard audio (6-channel C-Media) & onboard LAN (VIA).

BTW, I bought everything (except RAM - Crucial.com) from Newegg.com, was ~$40 shipping to NY.

I would agree with scoot but then I would change some of the parts like........

Epox 8KHA+
Athlon XP 1600+
Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM
