Building new rig --- want to future-proof the memory

If I install memory that is higher rated than is supported by the mobo and CPU, can I still use it in a reduced mode? Then I will have better memory when I upgrade the CPU.

Yes, it will automatically run at the lower speed. In some cases, depending on the OS-bit configuration, it may not even 'see' all of the available RAM.

The question is... depending on how old your system is, will that type RAM still be useable? i.e: DDR2 RAM will not substitute for DDR3 RAM, etc.
