hey all

i'm building a new rig: tbird 950 on an msi k7t pro2a mobo. i'm gonna stick a cooler master heatsink/fan unit on the cpu with some thermal compound between them. anyways, will i need an intake AND exhaust fan? do i need to buy both or can i buy one? the case i'm buying is an inwin midtower atx...are there places for intake and exhaust fans on these newer cases? and are they supported on the mobo?

thanks again everyone

It's best to get BOTH an intake AND an exhaust (80mm I assume), but if you're limited (for some odd reason) to one, your best bet is an exhaust fan. Almost any 80mm fans are "compatible", but I would stay away from sleeve bearing fans. The fans usually recommended are Sunon fans, and you can pick up a 3-pin (with rpm monitoring supported) one from 2CoolTek right HERE. Of course, if you want better fans (quieter and better performance but a bit more expensive) you can go for the 80mm Panaflo's found at Case ETC right HERE. Hope that helps in your search :)

as a matter of taste I choose to run all my fans directly off the power supply. it is up to you. you should be fun if you run a couple fans off the mobo, but, including the 2 60mm on my heatsink, I have 6 fans running in my turbine...er..case :) I just don't want to stress the mobo that much, and it kept slowing one of my 60mm heat sink fans for some reason.. two identical fans, one turns 4500rpm the other only 3500rpm.

sunon and panaflo are nice fans. my antecs seem to be working out pretty well so far, but I want to replace my cheap adda 80mm on the HD rack with a higher flow sunon or panaflo.
