im coming from a P4 2.6C, 1gb pc3200

i wanted to build a new pc around may but was told to wait towards end of summer b/c intel had some new chips coming up worth waiting for

i was browsing newegg and it seems the core 2 duo chips are the way to go...is this correct?

if these are the newest cpus from intel i was going to go with either this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004

or this one depending on what my budget will be

i have not been following the technology lately all i remeber is pentium 4 800mhz good, celeron cheap....now looking at newegg there are so many choices for intel....so are these core 2 duo the chips everyones been waiting for?

Yes they are. Core 2 Duo (C2D) is faster than AMD's offerings, use less power and the cheap ones (6300 and 6400) overclock beautifuly.

As to what PC you chose it'd be best if you stuck up your budget, intended use and anthing else important like if you're a low noise freak or if you're overclocking and let the anandtech webmonkeys pick the bits for you.

or make a list of parts for critiquing. i personally think the 6300 is a better deal than the e6400. it's around $40 cheaper and you don't lose much performance...it's a pretty good overclocker. if it beats the fx-62 when overclocked, i'm sure basically all cpu bottlenecks will be taken care of anyway
