For starters I want to build my new pc for gaming and some media. I want to be able to play games like F.E.A.R. Here is my current setup: P4 1.8Ghz, 512mb RAM, ATI 9200, 120GB HD, Intel mobo with intergated audio. Here is what I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego

For sound card i'll get a BlueGears X Plosion 7.1 or X Raider 7.1 in january when they are released. Is it worth the extra cost for a 7800GTX over the 7800GT? Is there any other RAM that you would suggest? Also I've never overclocked a pc before not sure if I will but I would like to be able to with my hardware. I would like to keep it in the $1000 - $1500 range. Any suggestions you can give would be great. Thanks

yeah, or get dual core. get corsair value select, to save money, get a fortron 450w power supply. you will get a lot witht eh gtx, its just your call.

So you think I should go with the Opteron 148 over the Athlon 64 3700+. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either? As i'm not sure i'm going to overclock the CPU because what i want is a stable system with low maintenance. Also you suggested i go with value select memory, any reason other than saviny money? I want quality parts but i don't want to spend like $180 on 1GB of RAM. Will a 450W forton be enough power for a system like this?

The Opterons are a stronger CPU in general and are made for servers and workstations. Which are put to more work and should work longer in your use. As for Value ram it is fine to use with AMD products as they don't really care what you use from what i have seen.
