I need to build a new rig. I just got into Linux due to seeing how uber Beryl and AIXGL are so I attempted it, worked for a while, and since I am a n00b, I "BEEP"d it all up. So.... I want to build a new machine because I am sick of what I've been using:
Current Rig / Current Punching Bag:
Dell (hah, that's the problem right there, lol) PowerEdge 400SC
Intel P4 2.8GHz 800Mhz FSB
2 Gigs PC3200 Memory (2 x 1GB Modules)
Sound Blaster X-Fi Music (not supported in linux i think)
- - - - - Note: Also have an M-Audio Delta 10/10 LT for use with protools (not linux either)
250GB 7200RPM WD SATA HDD
BFG nVideo Geforce4 6200 OC 256MB
2 x 16x Pioneer DVD Dual-Layer Burner
and the other basics... NIC, USB Card
I've got about 10 250GB SATA drives (1/2 of them are brand new) laying around for a while now that would be good to put to use so I won't need any hard drives.... also not to mention the iBook 500GB USB and 250GB USB external drives I have)
With this linux box, I want to:
run (4) 20.1 Inch monitors in a canyon display. I currently run (2) of them so I know I need another video card...
enjoy Sabayon Linux with Beryl and AIXGL (so I need to keep this nVideo Gerforce something somethings - remember I need two video cards... would be awesome to be wrong about that)
Lots of DVD ripping and multimedia burning
Video Editing, video file type conversions
Mt style of operations is to usually have 60+ tabs or windows open at a time and am downloading, burning, you name it at the same time (yes to that has been all hard to due with the current rig)
So... a case I have, I sold my online computer store but I still can buy wholesale (below pricewatch) so memory is not a problem, and I want to keep the burners and NIC.
I don't want to spend over $700. (fine, I can but I am feeling a little cheap since I am buying another (2) big LCD's and have to get the mounting stand for the canyon display too.... so please try to keep if around the price - I don't mind getting a similar graphics card if not the same one either.... this one is hard to find these days
Thanks for your help... let's see what you people can do. I've been out of the hardware game for a couple years now and am relying on you pros.
