Building new computer

I need suggestions for a new processor. What's the current sweetspot for price/performance? I'm upgrading from a P4 2.5ghz I got 2-3 years ago.

Computer uses: general desktop with some gaming and numerical processing (running processor-intensive programs, but very rarely).

Core2Duo e6300 is the bang/buck champ on the Intel side. However, from the description of your intended usage a less expensive AMD X2 3800+ will be more than adequate for your needs. I would choose one of those two if I were in your shoes.
