If you must get a generic case, at least get a well-known PSU. Stay away from the GeForce FX 5 series cards like the plague. Apart from that, can't really say much, since I don't know what you're going to use it for.

Its a family computer for his house, so basic tasks, web browsing, office applications, some light gaming

Well, for starters, loose the floppy drive. No point in wasting money on a lagacy drive. Second, why not get a DVD drive? I'm not talking about a DVD burner (unless you want one), DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives are pretty cheap. You're wasting more money on the ASUS board as they are overpriced. Get a Abit board. The video card will work fine...for the most basic gamming, and you have a quallity made HDD.

It's good to see that you're using NewEgg.

go with s754 A64 2800+ RETAIL for $128 and Chaintech VNF3-250 for $76, this combo will be faster than that 2.4 P4 for pretty much the same price. Also, go for a radeon 9200 instead of the 5200. Prices are form newegg

yes, for sure get a cheap antec case, they can be had for about $60 IIRC and they come with a quality 350w psu. Since this a build for a friend, you don't want that generic psu to crap out on him, then he'll just get pissed at you and you'll have to be free tech support (not fun).

Wha? Floppies are so cheap it doesn't really matter. Besides, you never know when you're going to need to boot off a floppy. And Asus's boards may be slightly more expensive than others but they are rock solid, have great support and features, and last for a very long time. More than enough to justify the slight difference in price.
