Building a new computer,
Ordered opteron 146 OEM this morning, can still change it to 165 for $120 - should I???
Bought an Ultra Wizard case w/500W at microcenter.
Now I'm looking for a good SATA 3G/FIREWIRE motherboard with good overclocking possibilities,
Good Air Heatsink/Fan to cool overclocked CPU.
RAM - Which to get??? Does it really matter???

Any advice will help.
Thanks

Yeah give us an overall budget and what parts you need and what parts you already have ie monitor, case etc.

What will the computer be mostly used for?

We will all be better able to help you after you tell us this.

nec 3540 dvdrw
dell 2005fpw
Keyboard, mouse & dell 5650 sound
160gb ata hdd

That's basically everything that's left from my old system

I have a case with 500w power supply by ultra
Opteron 146 ordered

The computer will be used for a little bit of everything - games/video editing/photoshop stuff, etc.

As I said I'll be overclocking it, so I need:
Nice oveclocking motherboard ~$100 not SLI -
CPU cooler - I figure zalman 7700 or big typhoon. I'm open for suggestions though ~$40
SATA HDD ~ $100
Video card 7600 or 7800
RAM 1GIG~$80

get a case that doesn't offer a PSU, because most cases do not provide suffient PSU features for prolonged system activity. don't rely on the PSU you have, to be straightforward.

keep the Opteron you bought. get an Asus mobo, a hundred bucks sounds about right.

40 bucks on a cooler? just stick with the retail cooler if it came with one, as far as CPU cooling goes.

if you want 80 bucks for RAM, you can get Corsair Value Select, a gig of the stuff will do you good. you can find a matched set 512x2 for the price you're looking for, will total for around 80 bucks to give you a gig.

Put up the grabs for a Fortron or Antec PSU if you have the money.

the case you have is fine, it's not going to kill you. make sure you have a video card if your don't already have one.

Return the case/psu

buy:

A decent but affordable Case
DFI LANPARTY nF4 Ultra-D-$125
520w OCZ Powerstream-$90? <- dont skimp.
2X1GB OCZ XTC or 2gig G.skill DDR500-$160 Newegg
or
1gig OCZ or G.skill for around $100
Big Typhoon -$60

Just a note: If you going the DFI/Overclocking route You will need good ram. DFI is really picky about the type of ram you use. I recommend ONLY OCZ, Mushkin, or Gskill. Get DDR500s if you can.

Grab an Antec Sonata II. Its a nice case/PSU combo that will serve you well. Depending on your tastes, it may or may not look cool, but it'll serve you better than a cheap POS.

Splurge an extra $20 or so for the DFI Ultra-D

Grab a 1GB stick of ValueRAM. Do not even think about performance memory on your budget, it offers bad value which you should be spending on other parts. Corsair and Mushkin have been my favorite brands for memory in the past year or so.

To be honest, for the HSF, I wouldn't spend too much. If you can get a good deal on one of the big zalmans or the Scythe Ninja or another good one for cheap then get it, otherwise just get something like the 7000AlCu model. The HSFs really aren't holding you back on the overclock on these chips. If you can get the stock HSF from the Opteron dual cores (the nice heatpipe one) with the CPU then do it. Its a very nice cooler that won't cost much (if anything at all).

Check out the Hot Deals forum and you should be able to find a nice deal on a good hard drive. I think Outpost has a 250GB one for $70 after rebate, and its about $120 before the rebate (which isn't a terrible price, and so once you do get the rebate it'll be very nice).

I'm a little iffy about recommending dual core for you. Is it your first time overclocking? If so, just stick with the 146 is what I'd say, and then once you get the hang of it, maybe pick up a dual-core chip later. I take it this is a gaming machine? If so, you really don't need the multitasking capability of the second core. Its nice yes, but at this point its not really necessary. However, if you're going to be keeping this setup for a good while, then go ahead and get the dual core chip.
