Building new computer... need advice on components.

The HD in my old secondary computer is getting ready to die, and I'm thinking of getting a whole new system to replace it since it's so old (P3 700mhz). It's been a while since I've built a system, the last being my Athlon xp1800 box that I'm currently using.

The new computer is going to be used mostly by my brother and mother. Just internet surfing, IM, light video/picture editing, not many games. I was actually thinking of buying a Dell or something to save me the hassle, but if I can get a much better system for less, I might build.

I need advice on a good cheap processor/mobo. I can get pretty much any HD and throw in a cheap video card. Needs to be as cheap as possible without being a POS.

It's certainly hard to justify getting any cheaper when you can get the retail Barton 2500+ for $80.

If it's just for web surfing, consider the Biostar M7NCG 400. It's a nice dual-channel nForce2 board with the built-in graphics for $65.

If you're going to get a separate video card, look at the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra, which is the best deal you're going to get on a board if you don't need SATA.

If you need SATA, then go with the Abit NF7-S, but it doesn't sound like you need to spend $82 on this system.

Are you building the whole system, or are you re-using a lot of parts?
