Well if you expect someone to go through and pick out things according to your budget then you have another thing coming ;)

Well, most of the systems I've built have been AMD's, so we'll go with that for my suggestions. And if you're going with new CPU, Mobo, Memory, and Graphics card only, $500 should buy you a very nice setup.

If you want to go with all one place, little hassles, I might try MWave. I've been pretty impressed with their service. This is around $400, and I'd check for another 512 meg stick of DDR2700 when it lowers in price to bring you to around $500.

Pick up an OEM 2.53GHz P4, I think they go for about ~$495. Put the rest of the parts on layaway while you enjoy staring at the bare CPU sitting on your desk.

I'm doing the same thing. here is what I have so far:

ABIT NV7-133R mobo
Athlon 1700+/266 FSB XP
WD 7200 rpm 40Gb hd

$245 shipped from newegg

I had a stick of 256mb pc2100 lying around, but I'm sure you can get it from Crucial for not more that $100.

As far as video, I haven't decided yet.
