Should I buy a 4800+ with Corsair 3500LL Pro ram or a 5000+ with some XMS DDR2? thanks

If price is the same (or similar enough) then go for AM2, since it is a little faster. If there's a big price difference though, then just take your pick.

End of May??? I would perhaps wait until end of June and see if I could get a Conroe....

I agree with Furen on his "pricing" statement

edited for clarity...

... AM2 is a dead socket upon deliverly IMO(not Furens) and so it wont give you many future options...

LOL, nothing you said agrees with what I said.

AM2 will be with us at least 'till 2008, so I wouldn't really call it "a dead socket upon delivery". Yes, I know the Inquirer claims that AM3 will be coming out in 2007 but consider the following:

a) The only DDR3 modules out there are engineering samples, nothing even close to production.
b) Revision F, G and H K8s should be DDR2-only (G being K8L).
c) Latency on DDR3 will be even higher than on DDR2 so initial DDR3 modules could very well lead to lower performance compared to DDR2.
d) DDR3 will very likely be more expensive than DDR2.

I'm gonna suggest that you decide at the end of May, not now.

You'll know better what to do then than guessing what will best for then now.

I should have said "also" cause I meant your statement on pricing...if same get AM2...If a person has a sckt 939 however I would not likley switch over and have to swap out DDR memory and boards...

IN fact many aricles have stated that DDr3 is a more efficient design and the fact AMD has ramped up higher speed DDR2 support may show a faster push thru DDR2....

It doesn't appear there will be any great speed increases...

So unless the 65nm chips offer some great ocing ability I see little to NO movement in performance until a newer socket...SIDEWAY upgrades...

Conroe.

If you really want AMD, it depends on how much money you can spend on DDR2. If you have a big memory budget and want future-proofing, AM2.

If those 2.16 $240 or $300 2.4 conroe reach anywhere near 3.0ghz, it would be hard to not recommend waiting until July.

16 sec SuperPi 3.1ghz Conroe

Either way definately wait for AM2 or conroe since it's much better to get 2 gigs of DDR2 ram that can be reused in 1-2 years or resold on the market with ease.

AM2, firmly. S939 is about dead, unfortunately.

We don't know exactly when Conroe is coming out, and supplies might be short for awhile. Hard to go against Conroe otherwise though. And there may also be teething problems with the new Intel platform. Right now we just don't know anything. If I was building a new beast in the next six months (which I'm not) I would go with Conroe. Dollar for dollar it looks like the best choice.

But y'know, AM2 is not going to be a slouch either. Anything dual-core is gonna be a winner.

Conroe E4200 is my next chip. Supposed to only cost $160 and will kill a $1000 FX-60 when OCed. Has same multiplier as E6400 which is $100 more.

Conroe is going to be roughlty 4 to 6 months after the launch of AM2. A fairly long wait, f you want to upgrade now.

QFT. That's almost as bad as asking, "In five years should I be buying an AMD or Intel processor?" Well, not quite, but partway there.

Socket AM2 is launching Late May...

Pessimistic Reports of Conroe are Late September.
Optimistic Reports of Conroe are Early July

So 1.5 months to 5 months, depending on when exactly Conroe is launched.

I would say ?going by the info we already know?, waiting for Conroe is easily worth the wait. IMO it would be the best platform to invest your money in.

Although I am only going to upgrade to Conroe when I feel dual cores is worth it for my uses, until then my soon to be 3Ghz Opteron on my DFI Venus will easily suffice.
