I will be using 3/4" andgle iron to attach all the acryllic together. I will use the same angle iron to make shelves for all the drives. The case is a double wide. teh motherboard sits right in the middle of the case. Aces to the motherboard is from teh laft side like norml cases. I will have the top hinge off to the leftthen the left pannel hinge down to give great acess to the motherboard. 5 optical bays in the front on the right side of the case just above a 120mm fan. The powersupply will be at the top on the right side of hte case. Below the spu will be 10 bays in fron of three 92mm fans. on the left side of the motherboard tray there will be one 120mm fan inteh front at the very bottom and a 120mm at the very top. the motherboard tray wil be held in by angle iron at three edges on both side so it will slide right out the top. Drawings to come, and as soon as i get a couple quotes from plastic companies. the overall size is just 14"x14"x14".

If I haven't confused you yet then you have to be just as crazy as me, welcome the the club.

EDIT: finally got photoshop installed and here we go:
1st draft

The layout is:

FRONT BACK
LEFT RIGHT

Sounds interesting, although it sometimes is a bit hard to make out what you mean but the jumbled english and letters =)

Some drawings would help a lot to visualize what you intend, so far it could have potential but hard to say as there is not really much to base it on.

yeah, I have it all drawn out but my scanner is on the fritz again. I guess since it is just basically a cube I could just re-do hte drawings in paint or something. I'll see what I can do after work tonight.

seem kinda jerry rigged to me from what I can make out?....angle iron? why not use 5/8 or 3/4 inch acryllic and get the proper tools to screw it together clean?

are you actually using acryllic or plexiglass?

I am using .220 acrylic. And I know what you mean about it seeming jerry-rigged but the angle iron is going to run the full length of all the corners giving it a nice border. And the side for the optical drives is only about 1/4 wider than the drives on each side so there is just no way I could mount the drives like in all the other cases. Finally the angle iron is light. I can pick up four eight foot long pieces with two fingers. using all acrylic would have made the case even heavier.

With acryllic you shouldn't need any braces.
Aquariums that hold thousands of gallons of water are made from acryllic.
It can all be glued at the seems without any need for screws or bracing. It takes longer for assembly, because it has to be glued then clamped and left to dry. Then to get a good finished look you have to sand/polish the edges.

I like the look of habing the metal border too it though. And just as you said it will decrease build time significantly as I can just drill and rivet the whole thing together. I am lookign for a good program to fix the image I made of teh case now too. I made it in oaint and as I have a fresh 2k install right now all I have is paint and microsoft imaging and when I converted in imaging it went mad fuzzy. I think I will just re-install paint shop and that will do the trick.

I didn't build it yet how am I supposed to have pics of it? People asked for pics to better understand the layout as my description, though detailed, was very confusing.

well with much thanks to a bunch of 50 hour work weeks and a side project or two this case has barely even been started but some acryllic cutting progress pics are soon to come.

Why the motherboard in the middle? I was thinking of a similar case design (not necessarily acrylic), but for different reasons. I've got multiple sound cards, each with a break-out bracket for digital connections. To use them in a standard ATX case, I would be losing the use of a PCI slot for every bracket I install. My idea is similar, but with the motherboard on the one side, and two "rows" of brackets in the back, one for the pci card, and an adjacent one for the extra bracket. I'd love to see pics when it is done. Keep us informed.
