Hi guys =] I just joined these forums between writing up the bibliography for a paper I will be writing on the Bolsheviks... Lenin was a genius. Now, on to the topic.
The summer is approaching fast, which is a great thing for me, eleventh grade will be over and I will have lots of down time
I have been planning to buy a new computer for about two years or so, but one thing drives out another, parents kept wondering at how much money I wanted to burn for the sake of a damn machine... Anyway, all thats cleared up now, and this is a ripe time indeed to be building a new system.
Planned specs are:
DFI LanParty UT Ultra-D
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester
Sapphire Radeon X800XL, PCI-E x16
1GB (2x512MB) A-Data Vitesta DDR500 RAM, dual channel kit
Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 HDT722516DLA380 - 160GB SATA II
NEC ND3520A silver OEM - DVD-R/+R, DualLayer
Antec Super LanBoy Case
Tagan TG480-U01
First, lets make a few things clear. I AM A GAMER
Right now and for the past two years I've been using a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop, and I simply cant play ANYTHING on it anymore. Yes, I've deliberately kept putting killer titles such as Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 off so that I could run them on something better than 640x480x16 with Ultra Low detail settings. Its not surprising, given that the specs of the laptop are a Pentium 4 Mobility, Northwood core @ 1.8 GHz, 256MB CL2 Corsair RAM @ 266MHz, and a miserable AGP4x GeForce 2 Go 32MB.
So given the intense frustration at all the killer titles I'm missing, I've decided to invest nothing less than my life savings into a new computer. How much? None of your concern
Enough to pay for the above specs. I need to make this computer perfect, you see, I hope you understand =]
OK so...
Theres the LanParty board I included, which is supposedly ideal for 'mad overclockers.' Now, having been stuck with a laptop and an utterly crappy and unflexible bios, I have never had the option of overclocking. The only thing I have overclocked right now is my USB port, from 125Hz to 1GHz, which makes cursor movement much, much smoother, and reduces my MX510s latency from 8ms to 1ms. I never hesitated to do this overclock, so I guess I could be applicable for the field of overclocking. I chose the LanParty board not because its a killer overclocker, but its a good motherboard in general, especially in gaming benchmarks. However, the most notable thing is that there is the option of modding the Ultra to an SLI. DFI and Nvidia have taken steps to counter this cheap ugrade, I know, but I'm a Czech in my home country, and I'm pretty sure the new revisions of the LanParty boards havent hit shops in this country yet. But why mention it? Because the Czech eshops also sell the SLI bridge. Separately, just like any other component. That, the mobo, and a pencil, and I have the Ultra to SLI upgrade. Is there a risk of any hitches? Has anybody successfully done this mod, apart from the review?
I know that ATi cards dont do SLI. But the X800XL is a kickass performer in its price class... I'm pondering whether to get that ATi card, or a 6600GT now and purchase another later and combine them in SLI... But the SLI depends on whether I can do the pencil mod NForce 4 Ultra to SLI conversion successfully. Besides, ATi is going to release its own combined graphics solution soon. Assuming my X800XL was compatible with it, I would only end up selling the mobo instead. What do you guys think? X800XL or 6600 GT with uncertain Ultra-SLI mod?
The next question concerns the motherboard. Sure, the LanParty's a great OC'er and good at gaming, but I'm not sure about the OC'ing bit. I believe I would like overclocking, the thing is I'm kind of hesitating about it since I would hate to bust some hardware...
Besides, thats why I'm getting the Winchester, and not the Venice. Overclocking is not THAT important to me - getting a CPU which can OC well is a gamble, and the same applies to Venice. Some of the posts I read on this site have ppl complaining about the not-so-overclockability of the Venice. Venice has just started getting into the Czech hardware market at double the price of their winchester counterparts. Since OC'ing is such a gamble and I would hate to waste money, I have a few questions on Venice. Are there any other advantages to getting a Venice then, apart from OCing? Improved memory controller? Sure, but will it improve my FPS? And will a 3000+ incapacitate or hinder the performance of the X800XL?
Finally, I'm getting the A-Data Vitestas. Might not be familiar in the American market, but here in Europe we have them quite readily available. Are there issues with high-speed DDR500 RAMs and the NForce 4 Ultra? I read a review of the A-Datas at InsaneTek and the guy OC'ed these modules with a 3000+ Winnie and LanParty board to 280 HTT, but he didnt get a dual channel kit. Good memory? Should I expect any issues with such high memory frequencies? Since Winnies officially support only DDR333, or something like that.
Thanks for any help guys.
