Building my first new computer in four years

Hey all,

I'm moving to a new city and have decided my four-year old laptop isn't going to cut it anymore, and I'm tired of replacing faulty hardware. I'm wondering if I can get some advice on how to build my new desktop.

I want it to be able to run games moderately for the near future (read:eek:blivion), so that's what I am trying to build around. The base of the system is going to be the intel duo E6600, because it's the cheapest of the bunch with the 4MB cache. Judging from Anandtech's most recent article, overclocking it should be safe and easy. I figure I'll go with a GeForce 7900 GT for video, but because I don't plan on adding another card, I don't need an SLI mobo, right? Any suggestions on which motherboard to go with? The other question I have has to do with RAM. I want 2 gigs (2 x 1GB) of DDR2 running at 733 or 800 mhz, but I have to admit that I don't understand what the timing of the chips has to do with anything. Is there a real advantage of one kind over another? I am leaning towards the OCZ Gold Series Dual Kit, which runs at 800 mhz.

That's it, really - the power supply and case, along with the HD, aren't an issue. Neither is the cooling or the DVD drive. Any suggestions you guys can make are really appreciated, thanks!

There are about 15 threads containing this same setup and people talking about them... Look down into the list and see ones like compare these 2 conroe setups, or my conroe build or whats the best conroe...

lots of choices and all points have been beaten to death, including posts made my me... search my posts and you will find tons of conroe questions and answers
