Building my first computer.

My current computer has been running for over 5 years without many issues, but it's getting outdated every year when new software comes out, so I've decided to build a new one. This will be my first computer I've ever put together. A lot of people say it take a lot of skill and passion to put together a system to your own specifics, instead of buying one from dell like most people.
I mostly will use my system for gaming and downloading, and my spend limit is around $2000.

(Before I start, I would like to say that I'm not an amazing computer tech dude)
I came on this forum to get a bit of help, and hopefully save some money.

These are the parts I've written down so far that I'm thinking about getting:

Comp Case

Power Supply

M-Board

RAM

CPU

Hard Drive

CD Burner/Drive/Floppy

Again, I'm not the best comp person on this planet, in fact I'm probably the least comp-knowing person on this forum.

I would like to know if all of these parts will work well together and not blow up my house.
My main questions are:
-Will the CPU be compatible with the M-board?
-Will I need to get another CD ROM drive, the main DVD/CD burner drive(samsung) will be the main drive, and the CD drive(sony) will be the secondary.
-Will I need a second hard drive?

Any help on these issues is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The motherboard you have there is a socket AM2, and your processor is a socket 775. Those are not compatible. I would go with the one jpeyton suggested, or perhaps This one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131045. Both are very good boards, although this ASUS may be a bit more stable since I'm gathering that you're not looking to overclock. I would disagree with jpeyton though and say that either PS you get is going to work just fine. Have fun!

That vid card is an AGP slot, Your mobo has a PCI-express slot, so make sure the card you get is PCI-express.

The mobo you picked is a socket AM2, this socket fits only AM2 processors, which are AMD processors, you picked an Intel proc(good choice), so it need to have a mobo that is socket LGA775

that 700w is way overkill, and so is that 620w, get this PSU and peytons vid card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817256001

and this mobo (pci express)

you could also get the mobo prezweezy suggested, they're both good boards

That CPU and the mobos we suggested compatible, and you don't need another HD unless you want more than 250gigs of storage.

You don't really need that extra sony DVD-rom do you?

It would be interesting to see that C2D in the AM2 socket plus an AGP in a PCI-e, all thats left is plugging a SATA into a IDE port! lol j/k good luck with the build!

Thanks for the replies guys.

So do you think I'll be fine with the samsung DVD ROM drive as my main drive and the sony CD drive as my secondary?

I don't see what would be wrong with it. Just remember that the Intel P965 boards only support 2 IDE devices. You could even look into an SATA burner as they're cheaper now too.

Post up again with your new specs.

dvd burner can read cd's as well so you don't really need a dvd drive.

but it's nice to have both dvd drive and burner so that you can put any cd's or dvd's into dvd drive and let the burner to copy.

Yeah those drives will work, they'd have worked w/ just about any board...just 2 IDE devices.

Great choice on the PSU, however for your setup its a bit overkill. That thing supposedly can run 2 8800GTX in SLI. The 520W would be fine for you.

Yea but it's only $40 more, nothing wrong with more power!

Last question:
Are 2 hard drives enough or should I get 3?
