Hey everyone. I've decided i'm going to try to build my own computer.
I was wondering if you guys could check out what i've picked out for components and tell me if you think this thing will boot! lol.
I don't really know what i'm doing, but used educated guesses to choose the parts.
Also if anyone things perhaps a different model component would be better please suggest!

Component List Model Price Store
Case XPC SB95P V2 $420.00 New Egg

Total $1,327.00

if anyone is really interested in helping me, which would be very cool.. I can email you the excel file which has links to all the parts.

Thanks in advance!

Is noise and heat critical issues? Because that system you spec'ed will run VERY noisy and VERY hot due to that Intel PresHott CPU.

You might want to look for a barebones with an Athlon64 instead... Or build your own.

I really suggest you got for an AMD XPC. As wisdomtooth said, it'll run really noisy and hot.
(Don't put Intels in small areas, could get burnt.)

Noise is definatly an issue, i would like to keep it as quite as possible without saccrificing performance. I chose intel because I heard it was cooler and quiter. Obviously I could be wrong. Do you guys have any links to sites that compare noise and heat?

Also I will be using this computer alot for Photoshop and do alot of multitasking so I thought intel would be better. I definatly will be doing some gaming, but I don't require the absolute best performance for this.

When I was choosing components I tired to pick the ones I thought would be the quietest. Besides your thoughts on the CPU, should everythign else be quite?

LOL, you just happened to pick THE WORST CPU when it comes to heat generation. There are NO CPUs out there right now that runs hotter than a Pentium-4 Prescott. The thing puts out almost 100 watts of heat when under load (!).

You might have confused it with the Pentium-M (Dothan)... That's the coolest-running high-performance CPU out there right now, and can give the Pentium-4 a serious run for its money. Because Pentium-Ms run so cool, they are easy to cool quietly. Pentium-M Dothan systems are VERY expensive though.

Your best compromise between cost, performance and cool/quietness would be an Athlon64 Winchester system.

Personally, I have a shuttle with a 3 gig prescott in it. My 5900 is twice as loud as any other component in the thing. The P chassis has much better cooling then my G chassis, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.

You're loudest component will most likely be your video card. Don't forget you can put a doublewide in a P chassis, so if you want a bigger fan that runs slower and quieter, it can be done. I'm pretty sure the gigabyte passively cooled cards fit in the P chassis. They make a PCI-E 6600(non-gt), X800 and X800 XL. The X800 XL being the most expensive and best of the bunch.

On another note, I'd splurge a little and pick up a 600 series processor with the 64 bits enabled. Win XP 64bit was just released and I imaging adobe will make some changes to the next version of photoshop to take advantage of it.

Hey guys, so i've finally decided to go with AMD.
I'll post up my new build idea soon.
One part that i'm stuck on right now is choosing the video card.
I am actually considering 3 different cards, Gigabyte 6600 gt, Gigabyte x800xl and the MSI x800xl.

what do you guys think? I'm definatly after silent, but will the gigabyte cards work well since the card in the P chasis is placed against the wall?

I'd spend the extra 20 bucks and get the NEC 3520 DVD burner. Better yet, ditch the floppy and it'll only cost you an extra 3 bucks.

Sad, thought we had another Intel SFF but then is persuaded to switch over to AMD, oh well...actually your system looks great, i'd take it. Good luck, should take you about 30 min to throw all the hardware in and you'll be off and running.

The only Intel SFF I would buy would be one powered by a Pentium-M... Those PresHott P4s are nearly impossible to cool quietly. I'm talking quiet enough for HTPC use, i.e. no audible fan noise at 1 meter so you don't hear a background whirrrrr while watching a movie with THX surround sound or listening to music with the HTPC.

Yea thanks for showing me the light(AMD).

What do you this about the gigabyte video card though, do you think it would fit in the shuttle?

The 6600GT fits in a G5 chassis Gigabyte 6600GT

From what I've read over at sudhian.com forums, you might have problems with the backside of the heatpipe hitting the case. I couldn't find any threads with someone who had one. Sorry I can't be of more help on this one.
