y would you not want to swtich from intel cpus? the athlon 64's are cheaper and far better performers, much of it in games. first off, if you want to go intel, dont go with the prescotts. the northwoods are superior (faster) and run cooler. also, dont get a cpu with only 533 mhz fsb. if you want a system that will run doom 3 on high quality, you will need at least a radeon 9800 pro and an athlon xp 3200+, athlon 64 2800+, or pentium 4 3.2C GHz. as for resolution, to run on high quality, you will need to keep it at 1024x768 max. also, to let you know, the new generations are inferior to the new generations of athlons in every way. the only thing keeping intel alive is the market. people like the cpu's they know nothing about. most people that know about comps choose amd, and there's a reason behind that. if you want, i can explain to you why amd is superior at gaming and in other things. just ask. i'm not trying to make you change your decision in a negative way. i just want to tell you which one is better for your money and the comparisons on gaming performance and etc.

also, to help you on your build, refer to this, thanks to MechBgon, where ever you are. :) This guide really helps out a lot, so it'll make it easier for you, since this is your first.

I think i read somewhere that my mobo only supports prescot.. is that possible? also do you consider 400W to be sufficient

Alright, first off, what is your max budget? Second of all, what are your reasons with not wanting an AMD processor?

my budget is 800 tops, there is really no good reason why not wanting a amd, i just thought intel were more reliable and stable

NOT ture. Infact, AMD currently is blowing Intel out of the water in gaming performance. You DO NOT want to get a Prescott or any Intel CPU for gaming since you'll be at stock. I'll try and throw together something for you at newegg.

And no 256mb is not necessary. Since you're on a budget the best card for your money would be the 9800pro 128mb.

intel is no more reliable or stable then amd. also, for video card, you will want to get the radeon 9800 pro. 400W psu is more hten enough. a quality 300W psu is actually fine for a setup you'll have for that price. dont just get any psu or go by wattage. u have to go for name brand, such as antec, enermax, fortron/sparke, pc power and cooling, and etc. quality over quantity. reason for this is because of reliability and the voltages on the rails. their very important. i dont know mcuh about intel mobos, but i think that it supports northwood also. i havent seen an intel mobo that supports only prescott yet.

AMD 64 2800
ASUS K8V
1GB Crucial pc3200 Value Ram
Radeon 9800

There you go...

add another 100 for case, PSU, cheap optical drives and you have a kickass system for 800 bucks
