hey all,
i'm in the process of planning out the parts for a new multimedia box that will act as a massive repository for music and video, as well as a mid-level workstation for audio/video editing, etc... the system will most likely run on a pair of athlons, in the 1.8-2GHz range, and i'm going to start it out with a half-gig of memory. the sound card is going to be one of the audigy cards as an all-around soundcard, and a DigitalAudioLabs CardDeluxe for projects where sound quality matters. i want to be able to hook my cable signal into this machine, as well as using it for dvd playback to the monitor and/or tv, digital vcr, desktop television, etc... i don't *need* firewire/DVI right now, but it would be nice down the road...
while i really like the feature-set of the radeon 8500DV i know that ATI has always been plagued with driver and support issues (especially when used together with Creative products), and i'm wondering if one of the ti200 or ti400-based cards would not be a better bet for the type of machine i want to build. do any of you out there have direct experience with the radeon and the gforce, sort of in a side-by-side comparison... what i mean to say is that probably the most useful responses would come from people who have used both and can speak to a direct comparison... although that doesn't mean that everyone else shouldn't throw their 2 cents at me... any suggestions...?
as for the rest of the system, it'll have a dvd-rom and a burner... some kind of disk array for video editing and mass storage, and will boot off SCSI. if you need more info on other periphs, let me know...
(i should also mention that this box will be used about 5% of the time for games, so that's not as important to me... )
