Building First New Computer in Four Years - Need the good ol' Anand Approval

I am about to build my first computer in five years and as my system looks like this so far:

Epox EP-8RDA+ - $112 (Newegg)
AMD 2100+ -$95 (Newegg)
2 x 256 MB Crucial 27000 DDR -$86 (I have several friends who work at Micron so
this is more about that then it is performance?)
WD 80GB SE - $98 (Newegg)
PNY TI4200 -$80 (BB) (Big thank you to whoever posted that on the Hot Deals
board!)
Hercules Gametheater XP - salvaged from prior rig

Any thoughts/recommendations?

I am also still looking for recommendations for a case, power supply and whether or not would need extra cooling. I am not looking to overclock right away but may want to in the future. Will the standard heatsink on the CPU be good if I am not OC?ing? And how much power do I really need in a PS? Seems like there is a lot of conflicting info out there and while I know enough to buy a reputable PS, whether I need 300W, 340W or 400W (and will the ratings actually tell me what I am getting!) I just can?t quite figure out yet.

As for the case, a mid-tower setup will do just fine and I was looking at the sx635bii w/ 350W PS for $80 (newegg) but I am pretty sure I don?t want a door on my case as they just seem to get in the way. Any thoughts out there?

I am actually upgrading from a PII 350 so anything I do will be heads and tails over what I am running now. I will be using this rig mostly for gaming and music editing and mixing so I think I am building a system that will take me a few years down the road.

Let me know what you think and thanks in advance.

Looks like a nice system 🙂

Comments:
- those 2100+'s overclock like crazy should you get the urge 😉
- With the current prices of RAM you may want to jump straight to 1 GB, but this is a budget issue more than anything else
- PSU wise, a 350W supply should be more than enough. The Antec TruePowers are supposed to be very nice, I have a ThermalTake PurePower personally and it is pretty quiet and has variable speed fans.
- Cases, I have an Antec SX635 case and I really like it. Antec cases are highly regarded in general, you may want to grab one of their case + PSU combos as they are top-quality stuff

Best of luck with the rig 🙂

I run about the same equip (1600+ oc'ed to 2100+) and yea it is freakin fast and will hold u for a couple of years.. the only flaw is taht sometimes it definetly feels like i need more RAM, and with RAM so cheap right i strongly suggest just gettin two 512 MB DIMMs

Thanks to all for the advice and I think I will go ahead and get the 1 GB of RAM, as obscene as that sounds to me at the moment. I am heading to Newegg right now? may be back in here if I am stupid enough to blow the install somehow.

As far as case and PS went, it looks like I will just end up with a Antec SLK3700 with a Truepower 350W PS. Thanks again!
