Building first budget pc

i'm tired of the 700 celly i'm using. money is very tight. think i'm going with Shuttle AN35N and a Sempron 2200. I need advice on a decent cheap case 30 or so or cheaper. only doing slight oc to start. building dream machine in spring, but want to build this first
 
This was my first ever built PC - And I was on a budget. After about four months of saving I finished it in January 2003. Most of the parts came from my old Compaq Presario.

Celeron 1.7GHz 
MSI (6566E) 845E Motherboard
128MB DDR PC2100 Crucial  
40gb Maxtor 5400rpm ATA100 hard drive (For me 40gb is all I need- I got more space than outer space) 
Asus Geforce 2 MX400 64mb SDRM graphics card (this cards get the job done but compared to other cards it sucks)
Sony 1.4 floppy drive
Philips 4x12x4 CD-RW external 
Compaq 40x CD-ROM LTN 403
Generic case W/ 350w Eagle PSU (For a generic case and for only $49 this box rocks) 
Microsoft Windows XP Pro

The Antec and Chieftec cases are far superior to the Maxtop linked above.
Here's an Antec that only cost $8 more than th 2600AMB and it comes with a 350watt PS and a 120mm rear fan. (definately more than $8 worth of an upgrade) Antec SLK1650B

It also has grommeted hard disk mounts.

Yeah, make sure it's a quality power-supply unit. Beware of the Enermax cases since they have scummy PowerUp/L&C power supplies, not real Enermax ones. I like the Antec SLK3700AMB quite a lot, if you can find a good buy on that. 350W Antec power supply with three-year warranty, 120mm rear exhaust fan, pretty quiet, expandable, easy to work with... pics of the SLK3700AMB in my photo-guide link in my signature, if you want to see one torn to bits 🙂
 
Hey Man your the one that got me on this trek, thank you very much, after i read your deal the research started, i'm starting low end for now, shuttle AN35N w/xp2600+ t-bred, but i want a decent case. i need to get off this 700 celly quick

Hehe, I plead innocent by reason of insanity! 😀

Yeah, you'll be enjoying a serious jump in performance when it all comes together 😎 I know what it's like to not have enough money to get everything I'd like, too. If you need a less-expensive alternative, the Inwin cases come with respectable Powerman power supplies (OEM Sparkle Power), although they may run a little noisier.

I used an Inwin S-series case for my mom's rig, but now Dad's going to start doing video editing with it, and I wish I'd gotten the Antec SLK3700AMB to start with. More drive capacity, up to five hard drives can be fan-cooled with a 120mm intake fan, more power, lower noise, better exhaust... darn it, I should've listened to the little voice that is always telling me mechBgon, do it right the first time, or you'll end up doing it over 😛
 
yea i don't want to over 50 for the case, i want a good vid card, got a free monitor 19" IBM p96 it's 4 years old(i'll be happy with a year till i get a good one) but nice compared to the 14"
 
I just finished building my pc I bought this mge case and like it. For 50 bucks it comes with a 450 watt PS and a Temp display.

I put the seagate 160 gig HD in way more than I needed but for 50 bucks after rebate its a deal. I don't know what you want to spend overall I ended up spending 775 for everything but spent more than I wanted on the video card (250 for the nvidia 6800 OC) 285 for CPU and Board (AMD 3000+ K8T Neo FIS2R) and 122 on 1 gig discount kingston ram.
 
yes, that's a nice case. What are MOLEX connectors for? I was looking at the Aspire X-Dreamer seiries for 49$. I read a review that said one of the cons was only 4 molex connecters???

450 watt != a good PSU. to be honest, id rather have a 300 watt antec PSU than that POS 450 watter in that case you got.
 
Thats why its a budget case If you want to spend a ton on the higher end components it is no longer speed on a budget. The power supply has run great for me so far and if it craps out so what I'll replace it but I have pleanty of power to run everything I want. Coming from a guy who would pay more for a slower processor....

On the Molex connectors I didn't have a problem with them
 
Molex connectors connect the Hard drives and optical drives to the PSU. they have four pins and are shaped kinda like a D. ussually they are white. Mini Molex conectors ar the ones that conect the floppy.

MOLEX is also a company that makes the connectors the brand has become the term, like Cresent wrench or band aid.
