Building an External HD

If you were building an external harddrive today what drive would you choose?

I'm leaning towards either a 640GB-1TB WD green/black or Seagate. Curious what you all have chosen based on speed, heat, etc.

I've used 1tb Samsungs and Seagates for external purposes so far with no probs. Haven't used any WD yet because they weren't the cheapest at the time I needed to purchase them.

What are you looking for exactly, speed? Noise? Heat? I am a huge fan of Samsung drives; however, I tend to buy whatever is on sale. I have tons of Seagate drives, some Western Digitals, and Samsungs. I am interested in the WD Caviar Black drives since they seem to be very quick, quiet, and cool (temps wise). My Samsung SpinPoint Ts (750GB) are cool, quiet, and fast. I haven't had a single problem with any of them (and I currently have 8 of them running in RAID 5E).

i'd get the cheapest 1tb drive (or w/e drive suits ur storage needs)

mb a "green" (5400rpm) drive. since it'll be USB limited anyway. 5400 and 7200 used for storage purposed doesn't mean much

Better question: what enclosure are you using? a fan is nice.

I like this one, but it is so $$$$$.

I run the same model (but ide) 24/7 for 3+ years!

The enclosure is more important than the hdd.

That's a nice looking case. Would you guys recommend that case or the Antec MX-1?

Blue,

I like the looks of the Antec, but have personal experience with the AMS, and will go that route. The Antec is by no means cheap!

I would go 7200 regardless. You may use that drive elsewhere later on. Just look for something that runs cool. Look for a 3 platter drive....less heat, faster.
