Hey guys! My first post here and already I feel most welcomed. If you could help me with something, I'd kindly appreciate it. I'm building a rig for college and I have some questions regarding which components I should put in it. The desktop I'm using right now HAS to be replaced...ahem... P4@2Ghz, 512 SDRAM, GeForce 6200@128bit@128MB, MOBO with AGP 4x.. I know I've been living on another world......
In any case, I would like to do some video editing on the new desktop, but also not compromise and play some games as well at max settings on a 19",because it's been frustrating enough settling for the 6200 and having to always set the lowest res,the lowest settings...ARGH.........
1) Mobo: I don't really know for sure what to buy, but I'm thinking of one with PCI-E 2.0 (just one slot, changed my mind regarding CrossFire), and Core2Quad support.
2)CPU: Oscilating between Q9450+stock cooler or Q9300 and Asus Silent Knight cooler (still...the ASUS cooler is some heavy equipment..but is it worth it?) .. I mean..I will be OC-ing (for my first time) the Q9300 to probably 3 Ghz, but that's it...not going to be a heavy OC-er. What would you recommend? Hell,I haven't even decided if I should grab a quad right now instead of a Core2Duo..I want to do some nice video editing and also take benefit from heavy multitasking, but I don't want to throw away lots of money on the quad and see 12-core CPU-s next summer. I want this computer to last ('bout as much as this rig lasted so far). Do you think a E8400 would suit video editing needs & heavy multitasking? Also, if I want the computer to run for a long time, would a stock cooler face the situation?
3)Memory: Corsair 4GB(2x2GB) PC6400@800Mhz 4-4-4-4-12
4)GPU: I'm going to settle for an ATI Radeon HD4850 and was thinking of buying a new cooler for it...don't want it to get to hot..I know that there's a fix mod-ing some xml file, but if I want to use this card under Ubuntu..what do I do?! So do you think it's wise to buy a cooler for it? I don't want it to fry the MOBO and other components. I've settled for this one because at a resolution of 1650x1080 it rocks from my point of view. I'll be pleased even with 20 FPS on some extent,no worries there.
5)Case: ANTEC SONATA III; 500W (having decided to run a single GPU card)
6)HDD: Seagate DiamondMax 500GB SATA II 32 MB Cache 7200RPM

That pretty much sums it up...but please, I need some advice regarding the before-mentioned components. Thank you for your time. Hope I'll make the right decisions, even if I'm prone to making mistakes, like any other person is.

All those high-end dreams and you pick a Seagate 500GB HD?
Forget what you're thinking about the fancy 32MB cache and just buy a WD 640GB SE16.

BTW, What kind of video editing are you going to be doing... copying... creating from scratch... etc?
What program will you be using to edit video?
