Hi, I have this project, its all conceptual so I just need to get some rough price estimates.

I need to attach this trailer hitch to an item which will be moved with some thing like a Trailer Tug.

So I know I need to get two steel bars and make a triangle with them and weld the top together and attach a Ball?

I am kinda lost. It needs to support lets say up to 2000 lbs. How thick of steel do I need?

I was looking at http://www.mcmaster.com/ for the steel but not sure what type to use.

Can you weld?

This is an odd question to ask... someone that can weld would pretty much already know what to do. When you're messing around with that kind of weight on wheels you do not want something coming loose... May be time to have a pro handle it. A decent trailer shop wouldn't charge much to add a hitch/receiver to something.

^ Remember my first line? Its Conceptual so I wont be building anything, I just need some help putting some plans together.

I know I need two metal Bars. What is that thing called where the Ball Sit in on a trailer? I thought it was a Receiver but I am getting the Ball part.

Then I would conceptually call a trailer shop and get an estimate.

Materials will be cheap, maybe $30 or so.. Plus an hour or so of labor. It's just as you'd think... Three pieces welded to a triangle, welded to the item plus the receiver setup. But they may need to reinforce crap and etc.. Not enough detail from you my friend.

Do you know what the part is called that sits on top of the ball? But yea, I might have to call a trailer shop, just I dont want to have to explain my self that its just a project. Just want a simple answer lol so which is why I posted here first.

Adjustable height trailer hitches already exist. Why do you want to make your own?

Whats out in the market will not work for this custom application.

I've always called it a trailer tongue, there's probably some better technical term

Edit: and trailer places will be fine with it just being a project... you'll need to know the total weight of the 'thing' and the tongue weight.
