Building a temporary system just for a year

I'm moving 2000 miles soon (out of CA). My current system is an aging 6 year old Core 2 Duo paired with a 750Ti but I'm not planning on lugging it over there. I do plan to drive back in the future, though. My plan was to build a cheap system that I can use for a year and then get rid of it and/or drive it back and have it replace an HTPC that's also several years old.

I took a look at the at the sticky and am looking at the regular build.

1. This PC will be used for everyday web browsing, movies, but it will be for gaming also, and running at most 1 VM. With regards to gaming, I don't tend to crank up the resolution super high, but I run it at a lower resolution to get higher detail. For example, my monitor resolution is 1920x1200, but I run everything at 1440x900 so I can see the text. I haven't been able to play any of the latest games because I still have a dual-core processor.
2. 500-750
3. Buying from US (Wisconsin).
5. Prefer Intel processor. Video card either way, more preference towards nVidia. If I get a nice card, maybe I'll keep that, and sell the rest of the parts.
6. I will have HDD, keyboard, mouse available. Everything else will need to be purchased new. Regarding the monitor, keep it out of the budget. I'll be keeping the monitor, so I'm going to be looking for one also, if you have any recommendations. I prefer at least 25.5" the current size I have. But it looks like I'll have to settle for 16:9 aspect ratio.
7. No overclock.
8. Not sure of the resolution. On a 25.5" I am on 1440x900 resolution, which is easy on my eyes. So I guess, reasonable resolution but definitely does not have to be 4K or anything high-end.
9. I will be building this in the first 1-2 weeks of July.
10. I will not require any additional software.

Thanks guys.

I guess you could look into computer leasing. I don't recognize the names of any businesses I see in a Google search that sell to individuals.

Would you be near the Micro Center in Minneapolis? Edit: Or the one in Orange County? You might pick up your CPU before you leave.

How much RAM are you allocating on that VM?

New lower-end Nvidia cards may come out soon. They may not be available soon, though.

I have an outline of [thread=2389797]a $500 gaming build here[/thread].

Thanks. I saw your build. I am in OC, what CPU did you have in mind? Too far from Minneapolis. VM runs sometimes, and usually it's an XP machine. I think 8gb of memory is sufficient.

Whatever CPU you get, Micro Center is likely to have it at a discount. I run a VM on an i3-6100 like in my $500 build.
