Building a system for the in-laws - HELP!

I about had a heart attack when my in-laws asked me to see what was wrong with their computer. Hmmm...could it be the fact that it's a 266 Mhz Pentium II Compaq? Trying to run AOL 6.0 and failing miserably? So, being the amazing son in law I am, I volunteered to build them a new system.

They are the quintessential computer users. Email, some word processiong, a litle surfing. That's it. They don't need anything close to top of the line, which means I have no idea what to get them. I'm all up on the latest and greatest, but what about the okay and average?

I want to get them a new case, mobo and processor. Their existing CD-ROM, modem and floppy will work just fine. I need to keep things at around $150, but I'm looking for quality components, and not something I'm going to have to come down and repair. On-board video and audio too, just because I think additional cards and hardware is just going to confuse them. Thanks in advance.

Go here...get the 800 duron....no celeries unless you want signficantly less performance...get near p3 performance at helluva bargain.

Get a case with 250watt psu (amd approved) = 30bucks

You will need memory almost no matter what...no boards running edo or pc66 unless you want used...I dont think you do...

Should be able to get 128mb pc133 (minimum) valuram at around 18.00 bucks

about 10 bucks over but a kick a** system to handle their needs now and the near future...

Hello Draven,
If all you need is a barebone system I would recommend this set-up.
These prices are from Newegg.com:
ENLIGHT EN-72370X3C4 MEDIUM ATX TOWER 47.00
MSI KM133A PRO VIA KM133A 266 MHz FSB 82.00
AMD DURON 750MHz 200MHz FSB SOCKET A 30.00
Kingston Value RAM 128MB PC133 168Pins 11.00
170.00 plus shipping

This will give you the room to expand the system in the future if their needs change. I build complete systems using these part for around 695.00, and the work great for what you are talking about.

Thanks for the suggestions. I knew I forgot something the first time I posted. Memory 🙂

I think I will go with the system Quixfire proposed. I was already thinking Enlight for the case, and I might go with Crucial for RAM. I appreciate the suggestions 🙂

IMO, this is definitely the system to get.

whatever you do, you can't go wrong with a Duron setup, they're cheap and they run great, bout an 800 Mhz chip with an epox or Biostar board would work just nifty. Probably about in that price range too after RAM and whatnot.
