Hi
I'd like to hear what you guys think about this build. I've built at least a dozen PCs in the past, but have been out of the hardware loop.
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$450 - $550
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA
4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.
Intel preference since I know their multi-core cpus are pretty good, but willing to go AMD for the right price 🙂
No pref on video cards or HDs.
I'm willing to buy parts that require rebates and even used parts from the ForSale section.
The mobo should be able to allow future upgradeability for ram (in case i need to add more ram for VMs), and support SATA II.
I do not plan on overclocking. A moderately fast hd and more ram is pretty essential.
Potential OS: Win Server 2003 (maybe Win Server 2008) - Don't worry about figuring these costs in to the hardware build costs.
Hardware costs:
Q6600 Intel CPU $200
Mobo $85 (allow 8 or more GB of ram and supports SATA II)
4 GB DDR2 Ram $60
500 GB HD $75 (SATA II if possible)
500 Watt PSU $25
Case $0 (have already)
Nvidia 8600GT $100 (require Dual DVI)
DVD Drive $0
Total: $545
Thanks

- Installing SAP application software and Oracle/MSSQL database software (For myself to play with. No other users.)
- Multiple concurrent Virtual Machines in VMWare
- Possibly playing some games like Starcraft 2 when it comes out.

- I need some mobo suggestions for approx $85 price
- Q6600 requires DDR2 PC2-8500 1066 FSB to fully maximize the CPU's FSB right?
Thanks
