<< you know, if you're going to be running linux, you won't even need a keyboard, mouse, monitor, or kvm for that computer. the beauty (some would say curse) of the x window system is that it's network oriented so you can have output go to your main computer >>

Could you explain further?

*looks around room*

Yeah, I've got a network...

Run an X-server on your main computer, and you can tell the linux box to send graphical output to your main box to be displayed by its X server. In the world of Unix, X is a display server, and the display does not have to be on the same machine upon which the application is running. Makes for some interesting possibilities.

<< 300+ Mhz for an mp3+IM computer?? You must be crazy!

a mere 133 will be more than enough for those two functions, even with a mere 16mb of ram.
>>

CORRECT! Pretty much anything above a P90 will be able to play an MP3 no problem. (talking from experience)

That could be quite useful...

Would a PII/233 work well as a fileserver? Cuz with the cash I save from buying all that extra crap, I might just use it...

my son runs a 133 mhz Gateway Pentium with win95 and 48megs of memory, and has a thousand MP3's that he listens to without any problems.
he also does IM, surfs etc at the same time without difficulty.
where people come up with the idea that "slower" computers cannot provide contemporary functionality baffles me ( is suspect those people are exclusively teenagers - experts without experience)
there is NOTHING that a P133 cannot do with the exception of "gaming"
my son runs soundforge, photoshop, wordperfect, etc without any difficulty.
now, i like a fast computer just like the next person..but if you are a tightwad like i am, you hate to waste a perfectly functional computer..
good luck with your purchase - you should be able to get lots of use out of it. my advice would be to stick some more memory in it (but actually not required!) win 95 if fine, and you can pick up a 10 gig hard drive for cheap cheap cheap, and this should be plenty for storing MP3's (about 2500 tracks or 200 albums). you will have to break the drive down into 2 gig partions with win95 - but don't worry - it works.

<< I'd say 300mhz+ and 128mb of ram or else those mp3's won't have very smooth playback. Probably wanna go with windows 98 as some of those programs being released may not work on windows 95. >>

300mhz for mp3+aim.....................:(When did 300mhz become so weak?
