Building a pre-patched Windows install image...

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an easy way make operating system install images that already come all of the latest Windows patches and driver updates already included. I already know about sysprep, but I was hoping to find a solution that's easier and more automated. Although sysprep would work, I don't like the idea of having to manually build a new CD image every month when Microsoft releases some new patches.

Does anyone know of any third-party tools that automate this process?

Nope, I don't know of anything that does it automatically.

nLite is pretty nice in that it saves your configuration selections. So you could download the new hotfix, open nLite, load the previous profile, and just have to add the additional hotfix to the list. Of course you'd have to recreate the ISO image at that point though.

yeah nlite is cool. check the msfn and ryanvms's forums. lots of stuff you can preload a windows CD with...all the service packs, updates, .net, powertoys, codecs, freeware you could shake a stick at.

yeah nite is a awsome program. it also has the ability to get ride of things you dont need. Before i had a xp cd image of 700 mbs, after getting ride of useless stuff, came to 250 mb! awsome

The only things I actually remove are the Tour and MSN Explorer. Other programs sometimes rely on the things bundled with XP that you never use (like CD Player).

I did this over the weekend...very nice to have XP install completely patched

Tell me about it. Using nlite and my selections left me unable to download. God only knows what it was I left out. Did it twice, then went to xp original, sp1 and then sp2. 3 discs no problemo. Was in no hurry though.

you did not need to do SP1 & then SP2 .. SP2 has all the updates included in SP1 within it
and if you had slipstreamed SP2 with Windows XP with Autostreamer, then it is only 1 cd
and a relatively quick install ... while I never had to reload the os, I keep a copy of Windows
XP as original, 1 copy Slipstreamed with SP1 for my pc that I don't want SP2 on & one copy
with SP2 Slipstreamed for if I need a verision fully patched (say for the laptp)

Now I have not messed with it since V1.0, but what about doing Sysprep and setting the SUS settings to a SUS server you create? I think SUS is still available as a standalone (it was free for awhile - required server). The updates would be automatic as your boxes would look for them on boot as you predefined it.

Edit - Still may be free here
