You'd like the 24" monitor much better than the 21.5" one, trust me... 25% more surface area -> 25% more immersion in Skyrim :p

Nah, It was a tough choice, but the contrast ratio on the 24'' monitor is only 20,000:1. The ratio on the 21.5 inch monitor is 12,000,000:1, and got considerable praise in the comments section. Combine that with the price difference, and I choose the 21.5 inch. (Very narrowly, as 25% more Skyrim almost seems like enough to make my head explode.)

The kicker is that dungeons in Skyrim are usually dark( if youtube videos are anything to judge by), so I really need true black.

Advertised contrast ratios don't mean anything. You're not going to want to use the Dynamic Contrast anyway, which is what those numbers are for. The actual contrast ratio for both monitors is going to be around 1000:1 or a bit less, which is typical for a TN panel.

EDIT: I should add that the Asus VH242H from newegg is a better deal than amazon because it includes a $20 off promo. The price is then $160, or $150 after rebate; only $10 more than the Acer 21.5".

contrast ratio specs are worth just as much as several acres of blue sky.

$10 shipping, though, so you're only saving $5 and you're buying from some photography partner store. Amazon's front page is $205 + $3.62 from Tigerdirect.

adorama has better customer service than tigerdirect can even dream of.

edit: there's two of these threads?

edit2: merger would be confusing so i'm locking this one, conversation to continue in the general hardware forum as it's a bit more on topic there.
