Building a new system

I'm building a new system and wanted to run it by everyone. I posted it a couple of weeks ago but have since maid some changes.

I'll be doing some video capturing and editing, some graphics editing, very little gaming, and I run VMware. It's also importtant for the system to be quite. I hate listening to these things hum all day long.

Thanks for the input.

geez that some expensive memory... hum well
maybe try to get 400mhz memory since your setup is like this :
400mhz on chipset
333mhz on memory
266mhz on CPU

If its not to much expensive for sure.. since the performance jump isn't that good

oh and... I usually go for retail CPU for the 3 years warranty

- Stay away from motherboards with VIA chipsets. Either nForce2 for AMD processors or Granite Bay (avail in 1-2 weeks) for Intel processors. Asus A7N8X Deluxe vs Gigabyte 8INXP Limited Edition respectively. AMD XP 2400+ vs Intel Pentium4 2.4B with C1 stepping (available at atacom.com or pcnut.com, make sure it says C1 stepping in the product description) respectively. DDR400 Cas2 memory modules either way in order to be better prepared for future upagrades. Two memory modules either way in order to take advantage of dualDDR - double memory bandwidth.

- If you get the Asus A7N8X deluxe board, don't get a add-on sound card as the integrated audio is quite exceptional. With the 8INXP, get a turtle beach santa cruz instead of the audigy.

- Hitachi CM721F 19" Flat CRT monitor

- Though the Intel Pentium4 2.4B with C1 stepping is plenty fast, with the 8INXP you could easily overclock it to 3.06GHz by increasing the FSB to 170MHz - lock the PCI/AGP buses ofcourse. All this is done in the BIOS. Could also overclock the AMD XP 2400+.

Everything else is very solid. 😉

Via/Sys chipsets for video/sound editing..........yuck!🙁 Stay with an Intel rig...........I built a similiar system for an uncle of mines with a 2.8GHZ P4 and Pinnacle Video editing system than ran about $700. Sweet rig, awesome video capture device!

BTW...He spent under $2600 total with a 19inch sony monitor from dell.com (best place for monitors and HD's!!!!!!!)

Sidenote: Get a Antec Truepower PS rather than the enermax, I have heard that the enermax is rather "loud" compared to the antec.

Also, I am not sure on this one but would a Thermalright SX-7 or the like (with either an adjustable fan or a Panaflo fan) be quieter than the heatsink you have above???

I appreciate the help. I have no idea what good fans are.

If I were you, I would go for an Nforce board like the Asus A7N8X, which already has a nice 5.1 onboard audio and Firewire. No need for an Audigy. I agree with the others that say to go with faster RAM, the Corsair XMS 3500 C2 RAM is what you want. With the XP 2400+ and the A7N8X, you should have the multipliers unlocked by default, allowing you to push the RAM fully even if the CPU wont overclock much. For video editting (filters and encoding) you will see a huge jump with the larger bandwidth.

If you are going to do very little gaming, no need in spending all that money for an AIW ATI 9700. If you want a good video capture card, the Leadtek TV2000XP is better than ATI's offering, and you could keep it around whenever you decide to upgrade the video card. Id go with an Radeon 8500 for the video card, which will give you good gaming (especially with that CPU and RAM), and very good 2D for the work you want to do.

For the heatsink, I would go with the Thermalright SLK-800 which coupled with a speed adjustable YSTech fan, makes for good quiet cooling. The AX-7 should be good, if you can find one of those instead, they are alot cheaper.

For editing, I would suggest you go with RAID as well. The performance boost with large files is well worth it. If you run RAID-0, make sure you have your data backed up though.

damn 2400.00 on a AXP 2400 + system

that is a lot of money you are spending

i would ask myself if i really need all that

IMO i would get a $1200 system and save 1200 for upgrades down the road in a year or two because IMO that is quite excessive since about $1000 will get you a very nice PC these days

A very high quality system.
I would go with a Nforce2 based motherboard, check out Anand's review, and get CL 2 RAM.
You might want to consider getting a 2.53 gHz P4 system for about the same money.

LITE-ON optical drives are LOUD, compared to the competition. Sony's are a quieter equivalent for a little more in price.

Any why not go with a DVD-burner since you do video editing? Link

I agree, they are loud.

Aye, that IS a lot of money! And since you are aiming for a stable- performance setup, how about looking into Intel solution? I'm not sure how much of an advantage Rambus has left over the new leading dual channel DDR setups. But going with Intel intead of AMD might be worth looking into because the P4, with it's higher FSB, is a better solution for memory extensive applications- like video editing.

And how about buying, instead, a nice, quality 17" or 18" LCD monitor since you do "very little gaming?" Gaming peformance [of the Samsung 151S (30ms response)] might not be up to par with CRTs, but the 2D, IMO, looks much better than my CRT (FE700+, ap.grille). Colors are more vibrant, picture looks brighter & clearer. And it feels easier on the eyes.
