Building a new system

hello all. i am gonna build a new system. i have a budget of 600 bucks for a motherboard and processor. any recommendations? i currently have a SOYO SY-6BA+ BX mb and p2-400. i was unsure whether i should get another soyo or something else. also, should i go for intel p3 or a amd athlon?
