Building a new system

Ive been reading these forums for about 2 months. Im building a new system and I keep getting mixed reviews about the hardware Im looking at. So to give some background I play games like Doom 3 ect.. I am NOT going to be overclocking this system. I just want something that is going to be able to handle games like Doom pretty easily and is going to be relativly up to date with a few upgrades for a couple of years. ARe there any real bottlencks here? The system I am looking at is,

Gigabyte Nforce3 K8ns (non pro) I dont want to raid.

Athlon64 3000

I currently have 512 of pc2700 ram. Would I benifit a whole lot with 512 of pc3200?

I am keeping my little 7200 40 gig hard drive along with my 10 gig backup

The video card I want is the Nvidia 6600GT AGP when it falls to about $200 bucks. I currently have a TI 4200

a 420 watt power supply. is this enough?

since my old case is a boring vanilla color my drives are the same color. Can I paint or is there a place where I can find new face plates for these drives?

Does anybody think this is a good set up that will be trouble free and run pretty cool?

I realize this is a pretty common question here and some might say to do some research. I have been researching I just keep getting conflicting opions. Once again I am not going to mess with this system (no overclocking) thank you in advance.

If you are set on getting a socket 754 socket mobo, i heard that DFI lanparty is the best mobo out there for that socket.

If you want upgradeability, it is better to get a socket 939 mobo such as the Asus A8V. Socket 754 is not best supported line right now and will be slowly phased out soon.

A QUALITY 420 PSU will be more than adequate to run your rig. (fortron, Enermax, Antec are pretty reliable). Do not get a no name crappy PSU which advertise 500watts or so.

If not overclocking, get the corsair value ram which run around $75 per 512 per stick.

How much is your budget anyways. It is really hard to suggest when we do not know your limit.

i read somewhere that skt 754 was going out sometime in 2005? i can't remeber where, but d@mn, that was a short lifespan...
