OK my mom needs a new pc, so I figure, hmmmm Instead of her going and buying one for like 700 bucks in a store, why not just give her my pc now, and make one for myself! 😛 The only problem is, i've never made a pc myself, so I want to get some advice from you peeps, seeing as how most of you are quite knowledgable about all this, here is a very preliminary list of parts/components, and I wont be needing a GPU, i'll just swap my 5700u. Please feel free to reccomend other parts/options, just keep the price tag under $675. And one final, yet important question, Could I run windows 2000 professional on a 64-bit system, and have the same performance/compatability as windows xp home? Thanks.

CPU- AMD64, 3000+ 512L2, Retail --- $227

Mobo- MSI K8T800 --- $126 HERE

Memory- 512 MB Geil pc 3200 with heatspreader --- $80

HD- (not sure about this) --- $73.50 HERE

DVD- Sony DVD 16x --- $30

Case- Antec Sonota --- $100
 
Sneaky, I am in the same boat - what about the Aopen k86 mobo as reviewed here on the main page at AT? It is less than $100? That is where I am leaning.
