Building a new system... which OS?

Greetings! My first day reading the forums, and my first post... kewel...

Anyway, I'm buying the parts tomorrow to build a new system... TBird 1gHz/KT7A. Anyway, I use NT at work (mechanical engineering/CAD workstation) I've used 98SE a lot at home on girlfriend's computer (k62/550 I built). And for the last 2 weeks I've been using win2k on my parent's new laptop (dell latitude). The latitude was bought used, so I installed win2k fresh on it, since it came with the install disc, and needed an HD wipe and OS re-install anyway.

So, I've had a few minor glitches and such with win2k, but otherwise I really like it. However, I'm not much of a power user at home. I'm not a programmer/developer (took one qtr of FORTRAN in college). Mostly the home PC will be used for Office type apps, games, internet, and entertainment (dvd's, music & sound editing, maybe some video editing, burning audio mix CD's, etc.)

I used to use Linux for fun on my 486 back in 1995 and thereabouts. And I have a friend who SWEARS by BeOS... but I think it's still not mature enough.

So, what's your recommendation? I take it many people hate WinME, so I'll not consider that right off the bat (unless oppinions have changed suddenly). I'm getting the 60GB IMB 75GXP Hard drive... so I'll have lots of space to partition, etc.

Is dual booting worth while, or should I just stick with one OS?

Also, I think the disc I have of Win2k that came with the laptop is an original release of win2k... since I'm building a system with ATA/100 support, if I decide to go with win2k, will I need to buy the latest release of the OS to get ATA/100 support? What other patches/fixes etc, are needed and available for win2k?

Decisions, decisions... just looking for some feedback. Thanks!

I personally use win2k for my home system. its a small power house in itself but I do like it when it comes to using it.. Damn stable and rarely has a memoryt leak.. and if it does... there always the wonderful task manager..

GO TASK manager.!

I like my WIN ME i'm using right now. No problem whatsoever when it comes to game. I am a mad gamer by the way. ;)

I'm a big Win2k fan since I've recently installed it. So far it's out-preforming 98se in most aspects, memory management, stability, etc. As for gaming, haven't really given anything a shot yet. But I'm dualbooting 98se/2k for that sole reason. :)

I'm dual-booting WinME and BeOS. I love BeOS, but wish there were more software available. Easy to install, very fast to load, and extremely stable. Looking to experiment? Go to FreeOS and look around.
