Building a new system, what do you think??

Here is my current system.

FIC AZ11E socket A
AMD 900mhz
384 megs ram
2 Maxtor 40gig 7200 rpm
Gforce4 4200Ti 4x
Audigy2
1.44 floppy
Sony CDRW-DVD

Replacing the mainboard with MSI "K8N Neo2 Platinum" NVIDIA nForce3 ULTRA Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 939 CPU $139.00
Also the CPU will be AMD 3000+ $155.00
And the memory 512megs PDP (256MBx2) DDR PC-3200 400mhz 2,3,2,5 T1 $87.50

All this for under $400.00

What do you think?

I figure 754 boards are cheaper which would be saving some money but out dated as they will be fazed out in 2005 so no point in wasting money here.
CPU and Memory have to be updated to fit this board, current dimms not even close to a match LOL.

Next upgrade will be the graphics card probably next year.

OR should I wait for the new PCI-e boards to come out which increases the cost adding a $200.00 graphics board and the boards and fx chips more expensive. Probably will take a year to get prices down and bring the systems some stability.

Maybe I am wrong so let me hear from you!

Looks like a good start for an upgrade. You didn't mention what kind of PSU you currently have...that may need an upgrade as well...

No point to wait for PCI-e yet, as it tends to cost more, and offers little to no speed advantage. New things are coming out all the time, so if you always waited for the next thing, you would be waiting forever. The parts you picked out will work fine, and if thats whats in your budget, then go for it!!

10 amps on the 12v rail?!? That is definatly not a good thing. You will most likely run in to a lot of issues with it, I would replace it with a quality PSU before considering upgrading to a more powerful system..my 350w Enermax psu has 26 amps on the 12v rail in comparison..the 12v rail is very important as it powers the CPU, the hard drive(s) and optical drives. 10amps on the 12v rail is not sufficient for a modern system..

I checked the 12v rating and thats 16a probably not going to work on a 939 board.
What about a 754 board? My guess is nope not going to work!

Hmmmm gets me to thinking I could power the drives from another power supply source....
Or
350W enermax psu, just another added expense now this is getting out of hand to do upgrades!!!

If you get a good power supply it will last you for a few years probably longer than any of your components. Its a good investment if you ask me.

Yes true, but what about the updates they have done to the nforce3 chip and some others that may have been implemented. My other question would be are the fx chips the next generation and am I limiting my self to just the Athlon64 by using the 754?

I would really like to keep it cheaper....
Would still be worth the wait to go 939???
