building a new system, please help

im building a new system and i want to spend about $900 canadian. I need sugggestions on what to get and i dont want to overclock

i need everything except mouse, keyboard and monitor

any help would be appreciated

I have built a huge number of systems. I am in the US so am uncertain of the equivalent amount of Canadian dollars. The fact you have a monitor will allow more money to be spent on the other stuff. Personally at this point in time, I would recommend something like an Athlon XP 2000+ or so. Then probably an MSI KT333 Ultra motherboard and a single stick of 256 MB DDR memory, probably PC2700. If you go to PC2100 you will save a few bucks. Right now 80GB hard drives are going for a good price. Get a Maxtor or Seagate 7200 rpm drive. Do you want a CDRW or DVD drive? 16/10/40 CDRWs are going for good pricing and the Roxio 5 Basic CD burning software if going for a good cheap price. DVD drives are now down below $50 US now. The big bucks item will probably be the video. If you are into gaming then a Radeon 8500 might be good. The topline Nvidias tend to be more bucks right now. If you aren't a fanatic gamer, ATI Radeon 7500 do quite nicely. I don't know what kind of cases are good, I am now building with a nice clone case with an extra fan and front side USB outs that costs me about $40 US. I guess you can add up all these numbers and see how it prices out for you. Then if you are below budget you can upgrade whatever you like. Good luck and have fun!

Bloomberg.com tells me $900CAN = $592US. So that's plenty of money to build a good system without monitor. The XP2000+ is listed on Pricewatch for $130 (all figures in USD btw). That's probably your best bet.

If you're not overclocking, PC2100 will probably do, as the Athlon bus runs at that speed. Going from PC2100 to PC2700 at 133fsb does not get you much from what I've seen. I do recommend getting 512MB though. Grab a stick of Samsung PC2100 for $100-110.

Case and power supply: not sure what to tell you here, but the Antec SX635 might be a good bet. It comes with a 350W PS, which should be more than enough, and sells shipped for <$100. You might be able to save a few bills by looking at other brands and models though.

Motherboard: many, many opinions on brand and model, so I'll start with chipset. The KT266a should meet your needs. It's solid and mature, and I don't think you'll benefit by going to the KT333. The n-Force boards are always an option tho... anyway, someone will have a good recommendation here but until then consider the Asus A7V266-E with onboard audio. $100 shipped. There are probably boards that meet your needs for significantly less though.

Hard drive: I have a Deskstar 120GXP that's big, fast as heck, and sells for <$100 for the 80GB model. Of course Deskstars have a bad reputation for reliability now, but I haven't heard anything regarding the 120GXP model so I took a risk. Anyway, if you are more risk-averse go for the WD 800BB, 80GB and sells for about $100 shipped.

Wow, we are almost out of money but that's fine -- the last item (I won't even bother with floppy) is cheap: CD-RW. Try a Lite-On 32X12X40. You can get one for <$60 shipped.

That's a good starting point. Hopefully others will give you better info on the individual components. Stick with the XP2000+, though, and don't go for less than 512MB unless you feel like adding another stick in 6 months.

Edit: Oops! I forgot all about the video. Crap... well, you can save a little money by going for an n-Force board and getting the built-in audio. Maybe an Asus A7N board. The 60GB WD600BB would save you about $25 over what I mention above. Anyway, bust your budget by about $40US and get a GF3 Ti200, or spend another $10 for the Radeon 8500. You did say about $900CAN 😉

Edit: Also, don't worry too much about the heatsink/fan. The retail hsf will be good enough at stock speeds. The retail cpu goes for $155 at googlegear btw.

with that kind o money...
you could get a pretty powerful package

depends on which way you want to go and what do you want to use it for
intel or AMD it's your choice....

or you can buy the system from me but you'll have to pay for the shipping costs...

mail to me Here if u'r interested

ps:to administrators sorry, i didn't mean to advertise...
oh yeah one more thing i live in indonesia...

🙂

this is what ive got so far, tell me what you think of this? keep in mind these are all cdn prices

AMD XP 2000+ 228.00
MSI KT333 ULTRA 123.00
AOpen GeForce4 MX-440 64MB w/ TV-Out 139.00
256 MB DDR PC2100 88.00
IBM 41.0 GB 105.00
case 9301K w/ 300W PSU 45.00
Panasonic 24x10x40x cdrw 71.00

comes to about 920 after taxes

I would have to tell you to think about a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 and not the MX models. They are significantly faster, and a GF4 MX is really a GF2, with a new memory enhancement scheme.

If crucial delivers to Canada, you can try combining some of the deals together. Last I heard was like 20% off, plus something like $25 off, and free 2nd shipping. Look around hot deals forum.

If you want to save a little bit, get a 1900+ and bump the FSB to 136mhz and you'll have a 2000+. 🙂 Your PCI will only go up 1mhz so it's fine. Or bump the FSB to 141 or 142mhz, you'll have a 2200+. Your PCI will only be like 35mhz or 36mhz

I'd pay the extra $10CAN for a Radeon 8500. Much better alternative IMO. Also, a 300W ps may not be enough. You may want to post the specs for feedback.

That looks pretty good. I myself am not too particular about cases. Just think about adding an extra fan down along the front. The cases I am using in my business now actually have a second fan in the side of the case right over the CPU. They also have two USB ports out the front as well as speakers and mic, for what those are worth. Finally, I used to like IBM drives but have shifted to Maxtor and Seagate. Maxtor is probably at the top of my list due to the very good response they give on a dead drive. Much better than any others I have dealt with. I don't know about IBM on dead drives but have read a lot of bad things about the overall reliability recently. May have been on a specific model line but I am uncertain. All I know is that they put a caveat on their website saying the drives were only designed to run 8 hours a day. After that they were more likely to fail. Craziest thing I have ever read about a modern drive. Good luck, you should have fun.
