how much are you paying total? what do you plan on doing that makes you want the 3 ghz p4 and 1 gig of ram? seems a little overkill to me. but i wouldn't complain if i had one :)

hdeck...
Well, I'm gonna tweak it some, try not to upgrade for awhile, edit video of my soon to be arriving newborn son, play the newest games out there, tweak it some more, brag alittle(about my son also..), and wait to upgrade next year this time...lol I already have several of these components...the ati,SB,case/PS,ram, speakers and blue loom! btw, I didn't expect anyone to EVEN see this post after it slipped from the first page...thanks for replying! I don't know how much, I guess about $2700 give or take a little. If I add it all up I probably wouldn't be doing it! Why do you think no one had any advice or comments to make when it was on the first page? Bad topic? Wrong forum? I was hoping to get some advice in what to look out for....oh well, maybe I'll repost it under a different heading?
;)

ArborBarber,
there is always a need to upgrade your computer after a year or two.... three at max. Because there is always newer technology around the corner, it's a good idea to buy what you need NOW, not what you'll need tomorrow. Pay for what you need today, save money and upgrade when you need faster computer. According to your specs, your system would cost at least $1500. You could get some cheaper stuffs, save some money and upgrade in the future. Of course, you could get some cheaper stuffs and donate the rest of the money to me. LoL. :D

Honestly, I find it very difficult to go E7205 over 845PE, especially when you already have PC2700. The P4G8X costs about $60 more than the Asus P4PE (most expensive version), and when you are purchasing that amount of memory (1GB), PC2700 costs about $20 more, and won't help performance. So, in the end, you are paying $80 more for E7205 and there is not a massively big performance difference between the PE and E7205 in most apps (5-7% in most apps, some 10%) although I don';t know what the difference between the 2 would be in video editing (just posted asking about this:)), but in games, there will be a small 5-7% difference between the 2, and I find it difficult to go it. I'll be back

Wow! I appreciate the input...The topic slipped off the first page and I thought everyone could of cared less...I really do APPRECIATE the input! :) Well, I think I'm gonna make some changes already...I'm gonna return the memory for DDR400 and I think I'll be getting the GA-8INXP mobo. I know 8X AGP has no real advantage at the moment, but...., and the ram could be used for the next generation chipset do out this time next year. Also I'd like to go with the serial HD(again, at the moment there isn't any significant gain, but come next year...) My last system was a P120 OC'ed to a P130, so as you can see I really don't upgrade that much. You might be right limsandy, maybe I am getting alittle carried away...:)

jgtDragon...thanks, I am really trying to stay current if not alittle ahead of the game, but it may be as limsandy has posted...I'm pretty sure this time next year, the ram,ati,HD,PS(?),case,...can be used if uprading to a prescott chipset..?

That's a nice system setup there, but I would really listen to what this guy said. Save 500 or so and get something cool like a new Digital camera, PDA, or MP3 player.

Adam...That's how I began this upgrade...I bought a new miniDV viewcam and a palm...then I bought usb 1.1 adapter...neither items would work with 1.1. Windoze 95 didn't support usb2.0 standard and my current puter didn't have head room for an OS upgrade...lol

Please get a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor instead. You're essentially paying !!!$400!!! more for a little over 200 MHz more. You seriously won't notice a difference between the $389 2.8 GHz chip and the $799 3.06 GHz chip. Please save your $400 dollars which could be used on much more useful purchases. :)

Sam...
Thanks...I've locked into a price of $650 for the cpu, that's about $25 bucks over intel's $627/1000 price, I do appreciate your advice...do all P4 chips have HT...2.8 cpu's and under?

Hyperthreading is *exclusive* to the 3.06, which is frankly, the only reason why I see anybody buying it.

FishTankX...
I also understand that there is some problems with HT, that with some software it actually slows DOWN..? However software written with HT in mind runs faster, coorect?

but the majority of applictions do not use hyperthreading
only a small percentage of applications do run faster
but only by a few seconds or about 0-25%(i've only seen 1 program that gets a 25% boost)
the others do not show or show little benefits

i personally like the GA-8INXP more
asus usually costs higher
i do not see the benefits of getting something similar but at at higher price
and i like the gigabyte mobo ability to use a serial ata drive outside the computer using the supplied bracket
good for hot plugging especially when serial ata is hot pluggable

Thanks...The site said shipping in 1-3 days..? But, we all know how that goes! If you do run across the mobo, give me a post, ok? I'll be looking myself, but two sets of eyes are better than one! :)

Dear ArborBarber:Intel fixed the problems with hyperthreading, so most of the time it won't slow down an application. Anand and Aces both gave hyperthreading a huge thumbs up. And at less than 5% of the die space it's free performance. Video editing takes a healthy 15-20% boost in some situations. That hyperthreading P4 will serve you *very* well.

FishTankX...Thanks, I really do appreciate all you guy's input...well, I decided to go with the ddr400!
I'm still torn as to whether or not to get the GA-8INXP...but I think I am pretty much decided on going with Gigabyte...I wish I could get a price on the GA-8INXP though...

Yeah, well, here's something that might entice you to go with the gigabyte board. The AGP/PCI lock for OCing.
