I'm putting together a new system with some old and some new parts. I have a 300watt ATX PSU but it doesn't have the 4 port ATX12v power plug and my new ECS RS400-A Mobo has a port for it. Is it required for the mobo to operate properly?

Thanks for any help!

New MOBOS come with two power supply connectors
the standard one that looks like this:

oooooooo
oooooooo

And a new one that is squared:

oa
oo

If it came with it, yes, you need a PSU that came with that power cable, otherwise your computer wont even boot.

You can buy a splitter cable that will provide the 12v 2x2 cable from a 4 pin molex. For an older computer, I think it would work fine. About $5.

actually the newest motherboards have a 24 pin socket and a 4 pin 12v socket, some have 8 supposedly, my PSU came with an adapter for it, but I cant say I have ever seen one with an 8pin 12v socket
