I have an aging c2d setup as a security cam server, running Debian and Zoneminder.
Old build:
Intel DG965WH
E6600
2 GB ram
500 GB RAID1
It works OK with the load at ~2.x most of the time. Only mobo complaint is the SB temp was always high on those.
It is going on 5 years old. Drives are failing, Os is old, ZM install old, and it is finally going around the bend.
I will add a few more cams but not a significant change in loading.

So, what would you suggest as a 24/7 motherboard/CPU combo?
Which drives? I need no more that 1 TB drives ever on this setup, 500 GB gave me 6 weeks of events.
If I wanted a dell or HP server I would not be posting here. This non-server intel setup has been as reliable as the weakest components, namely power supply and several drive flakeouts. Linux software Raid has kept me going through those.
Linux/ZM works best with Intel, so I want to stay with that.

It depends on the CPU power needed. I guess you want H67 or H77 for the RAID functions. Since you run a heavy load the dualcore IBs coming in a very short time might be the best choice. Unless you go quadcore now. And then I would pick H77 also to avoid any missing BIOS update for an IB CPU. Maybe also verify that there is a linux driver out for the IGP for your distro, should you need it.

For HDs, I would maybe say those "Green" HDs. Lower spinrate should in theory make them last longer.

I don't need much more power than the e6600 that I have doing the job now. The job is not going to change much, maybe 10%. No other duties for this box.
It has just pushed around too many electrons, starting to exhibit some flakiness now.

Alternative just a Pentium G520/G530/G620/G630(SB based) or something similar and a board that matches your required featureset. Essentially you should be able to do board+CPU+4GB memory for around 125$. You can use 6 series boards then as well. Only thing missing from 7 series is basicly native USB3.

H55 as in LGA1156? Thats possible if they still exist. But I dont see why you dont want a tad newer.

how about an Intel dh55 with an i3?

Running my linux server on an i5 650 on a gigabyte p55-ud5.
The reason to get at least a 32nm i5 is AES acceleration which frees a bunch of ressources for other stuff or allows the CPU to idle more.

If the hardware in your initial post is all you'll ever need, I'd say go for the cheapest Ivy Bridge/Sandy Bridge i5 (dual-core? 2390T/3470T - 35W, easily passively cooled, so one less thing to break) and a miniITX socket 1155 board with 22nm CPU support and sufficient SATA headers.

Depending on your workload and budget, I'd try to get some used RAM from someone for as close to free as you can get (people upgrading from x58 or p55 will probably be getting rid of their old 1G/2G sticks - try to get some 1.5V stuff, if not, some 1.65V RAM should still run at lower clocks/looser timings with somewhat lower voltages). More than 1G of RAM is luxury.

HDDs are basically consumables, so go with whatever capacity you need and the cheapest stuff you can find.

Thanks Rick. I need at least 2 gig if not 4 for this one, based on the years of experience with the application. I went 2 originally. The CPU works all the time, doing a stare-and-compare of however many analog cams I have going, and IP cams that don't have on-camera motion. The capture card is a heater so I'll have a fan or two going regardless, but I will look for low power processors.
EDIT: a friend has quoted me 300 for :
New Core i3 530 2.93GHz
New Coolermaster Hyper 212+ 120mm heatpipe cooler
New Intel DH55TC motherboard
New 8GB Kingston DDR3 1333
New LG 22x SATA DVD-RW (or I can use a DVD-ROM or add more)
New Corsair 430w v2 PSU or used OCZ 600w 80 Plus PSU
Used Antec 300 case

I may go with that.
