Hello. It?s been a while since I built a system so I?m looking for any good advice the community can share. This will be a gaming system on a budget. I want to be able to run all the latest and up and coming games at full graphics settings if possible. My budget is between $1700 and $1800. All the components and prices are from newegg.com. Will this build keep my happy for the next 3 years? :)

In my opinion...

Downgrade the PSU to a Corsair 650 or 750. 1000w is WAY overkill

Upgrade the GPU's to two 4890's in crossfire

Upgrade HD to a WD 1tb Black or (my preference) Samsung spinpoint F1 1TB

Switch the Case with an Antec 300 - With a SLI/CF setup you're gonna want a case with plenty of air coming in, and that antec should keep the whole system running cooler

Switch the DVD burner for a Bluray drive and get a netflix subscription with BR access

Thx for the input. I know the psu is overkill. Can you recommend a good modular psu that is SLI/CF ready? I?ll consider the gpu switch after more investigation. I was told the i7 w/ the GTX's is a good combo. Also I don't need blueray, I have a ps3 for that.

Tomorrows games are always a tossup but if an i7 and a good Video card will not then nothing will.

I'm not a big fan of SLI video cards. You are better off putting the money you would spend on the second video card in the bank and then just buy a better video card in 6 months with the money.

Seasonic M12 700w would be a good alternative. $150 after 10 rebate. If you could deal with non-modular you could save some by going with a 650 or 750w Corsair or PCP&C for around $100

If you go non mod tho..make sure you have some zip ties and an hour or two free time..you wil want to get as much airflow as you can and those cables will inhibit that unless you tuck them up and away.

thx for the response. can you tell me why you don't like SLI? Perhaps i should go w/ a single gpu.

Here's some of the cons about SLI

Needs a lot more power

Makes a lot more heat

Generally poor bang/buck, except when you sli two midrange cards to roughly equal the performance of a faster card

Twice as many cards RARELY means twice the performance. Some games scale very well with SLI. Some don't scale at all

Over the course of several years, you will usually get more bang/buck by spending 200-250 on a single GPU solution and upgrading more often, than by spending 450+ on an SLI setup

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I think I?m gonna go w/ a single gpu for now and up grade it to the GTX 285. I?m gonna stay w/ the SLI ready psu for the future. I did change out the case for the Antec 300, which is cheaper and actually got good reviews. This is my new build. Let me know what you think??

I think this is definitely a better setup. I can't imagine you being unhappy with the GTX285. And in a couple years or so if/when the single isn't enough, pop in a second (they will be super cheap by then) and get going again

Now that I have my system build finalized, I need some help picking out a good wireless adaptor for gaming. The wireless router I currently have is an older Linkys WRT54GS 802.11b/g. Wireless G. I realize I might need to upgrade that router. As far as the wireless adapter card I?m not sure where to start. At the moment I?m looking at:

EDIMAX EW-7728In 32bit PCI Wireless 802.11n Draft 2.0 PCI Card - Retail
Model #:EW-7728In
Item #:N82E16833315078

$34.99

Model #:DIR-655
Item #:N82E16833127215
$90.99

Also looking for a good wireless keyboard and mouse for gaming.

I have the Edimax currently on my list. I would pick that one of the two.
I you decide upgrade your router you might get an adapter from same brand.

Also power socket based conection caught my attention.
