Building a new gaming Rig...

I think it's probably better to post the specs, rather than making people click through to four sites to find out what you're building.

Just curious, you went top of the line on the processor, video card and ram, but why didnt you go with the A8N32-SLI instead of the premium. Its a much better board for only like 30 bucks more, especially if you ever overclock that FX-60

Keep in mind if you take Operandi's advice and buy an ATI X1900 XTX you should go with a board with the Xpress 3200 chipset and dual X16 PCIE slots so you can hook em up in crossfire.

For anything that supports SLI properly the GX2 will be faster, if its a doom3 derived engine it will be faster regardless, if its half-life2 based the ati will be close or take the lead. It also depends on whether you want to go sli/crosfire later, for now the xtx as a better chance of working in crossfire then the x2 has in sli but I suspect the x2 will be working for quad sli soon enough.

Also ATi 1900XTX

humm after reading that the x2 5000+ sounds like a great deal....

so the ATi 1900XTX over the 7950 GX2?

In my opinion yes.

The GX2 is kind of a cumbersome design, basically two cards cobbled together. Ok if you value all out performance above all else but not if you factor in noise, thermal issues, and reliability.

far from it ....ok i found the FX 60 for $599. What is everyone's opinion of it?
Is that from a reputable vendor? Sounds about $200 less than it normally sells for.

Not sure I'd recommend a s939 what with them being replaced by AM2 and then there's Conroe... Everything there will have to be replaced on the next upgrade bar the video card. The rig in your sig looks still a good spec if you'd need to wait.

'Course if you dont upgrade in bits and/or found great prices well fair do's, I dont know your circumstances 🙂

One thing about the motherboard. there are a lot of versions of the A8N. I noticed you linked to the A8n-SLI Premium.. check out the A8n32-SLI Deluxe. It's a huge improvement. You might want an add-in soundcard, since those NF4 boards come with AC97 audio. Other boards have integrated HD audio, like the Asus A8R32-MVP or DFI CFX3200-DR.

About the FX60 you say "what's everyone's opinion" -- if you want the highest possible overclock then go for it. Stock speed is 2.6, with 2.8 always attainable and 2.9-3.0 sometimes attainable. However, something like the X2 3800+ for $300 can reach 2.6. If you want the 2x1MB cache, you can go for the Opteron 165 or 170... are these things you've thought about?

To Davegod: if OP wants to go PCIe and dual-core, it's a significant upgrade from what he has... Conroe might be worth waiting for, but not really AM2...

why would you waste the $$ on a fx series cpu? total waste of $$$ imo

in fact you are wasting a lot of $$ on that rig - cpu, ram and gpu.....
