Ok, under the cpu, you install a backplate paster so you can screw in the Heatsink for the CPU...now, on the motherboard instructions, it says to remove the shield on that backplate paster before installing...and we forgot to...is it that big of a deal? we don't want to go back and do it, because we are almost done (just figured it out)

by the way, the backplate thing came with the AMD 64 3000 CPU...the "shield" on it didn't want to come off easily (i was just curious and didn't know if it was supposed to come off, so i used light force)

some diagnostic bracket on this USB port said that the CPU is either damaged or installed incorrectly..we had it on before (to test the fans) and it said that the system was booting, but then it randomly shut off on us...

it's an MSI mobo, but im really wondering if that play shield could be doing anything....any suggestions as to why the computer isnt working now?

and another question...we're reinstalling the CPU, and we took off the AS5 from the HSF, but do we need to take off the existing AS5? the computer really hasnt been used, and theres a good amount already on the CPU

Prob best to take the existing stuff off if it has been used, cos it has to be put on smoothly.
Once it has been used, and you take off the heatsink, time to renew the thermal paste

The MSI motherboard came with their "D-Bracket 2" component; when we originally turned on the PC it went through the stages and all went well. However, once we plugged the monitor in, all four of the lights stayed red, and the description of that says "System Power ON - The D-LED will hang here if the processor is damaged or not installed properly."

Well, that's great, because it's installed properly as far as I know. It's an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ for socket 754. When the processor was installed, it went flush into the socket and was clipped in and the heatsink was placed on top of it and locked on.

As far as cooling agents go, we removed the agent originally on the HS and then spread Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU.

I really have no clue what's going on. I know that the D-Bracket thing isn't lying as nothing comes up on the monitor when we plug it all in/together.

(disregard my sig for this post--this is a different computer)

Alright. Start from square one. Take it all out. Check for stray standoffs, etc. Clean the CPU completly off, put it back in, new thermal paste, put on heatsink, TAKE PICTURES of install so we can see that everything ok, then give it a try. Also, consider getting a beep code card, so you can get a better idea of what the problem really is.

Quick thing to check. Do you have the extra 4 pin power connector for the CPU connected to the MB?
