Building a new comp, but a heatsink question...

So, I'm gonna build a computer based around the AMD 64 FX-53/4000+, and I was wondering: I'm gonna buy the Thermaltake Venus 12 heatsink/fan to use instead of the stock fan/heatsink. Does the retail version of the processor come with anything else besides a heatsink/fan that I would need? Or can I save some money and buy the OEM instead? Also, any suggestions for a better heatsink/fan for the 64? General reccomendations? Thanks a lot.

If you are going with an aftermarket HS/F then you can get the OEM chip.

If you dont have any get some Artic Silver 5. It should work better than the goop that comes with the heatsink and fan that you are getting.

The retail CPu with included fan and heat sink comes with a pre-applied layer of thermal/grease/stickystuff that when the heat sink is applied to the back of the cpu - seals all the little niches so there is better thermal transfer.

If you are buying an aftermarket fan and/or heat sink - get some thermal paste to go with it, such as Arctic 5 (Just be careful you don't get any of it on any of the motherboard components - and a little goes a long way with this stuff)

Until then - read up as much as you can stand on removing heat sinks from CPU chips, applying new heat sinks - etc..you'll be glad you did when you go to work on yours.

Well, alright, thanks. I've already got some Arctic Silver, and I know how to use a heatsink, so I guess I'm set. Now, I just need 500 more dollars.
