I'm in the process of putting together a box for Linux and looking for some input for componets to use.

dual processor MB - what is better/supported.. AMD or Intel?
video card w/3d?
sound card?
Any other ideas!?

I've been playing around with Mandrake 8.0 for a couple of weeks and have really enjoyed it... even my wife (who shys away from the computer) liked the KDE desktop and found it easy to use.

Any input greatly appreciated!

One thing that will save you money and some headaches, get slightly older hardware. Both AMD and Intel are well supported in linux, grab either. for a video card would recommend ATI (since you seem to need 3d). I personally do not like nVidia, but others here recommend them for linux. I just use Matrox since they are well supported and I dont play games. I like my Creative ensoniq AudioPCI soundcard, but you may have different needs (mp3s sound fine for me).

There is a supported hardware list on www.linux-mandrake.com. If you want to buy a printer, make sure it's on the list. Right now I have Mandrake 8 running on this system:

TBird 1200
VIA KT133
Radeon 32 mb DDR (AGP)
Creative PCI 128 (built into the motherboard)
Linksys 10/100 NIC
Toshiba 16x DVD
Zip
Floppy

As you can see, I have hardware that's about 6months - year since release and everything works.

Also, wait for about a month until Mandrake 8.1 comes out non-beta. It has some real improvements.
