Building a Learning Box

I've been tossing around the idea of building a learning box. One that would have Unix and maybe NT or something similar on it so I can teach myself new skills, tinker, etc. Is this feasible? Barring software, is this cheap? What would you guys suggest.

if you're really more interested in programming software or learning how to tweak OSs then just about any rig that can support the OS should do, I wouldn't go overboard and if this is just an 'essential' learning box then strip it down to the bare necesitites, don't bother with sound, video, raid, dual processor (unless you want to teach the OS some more tricks), ect ect. Basically anything should be sufficent....

i would guess that he means nothing special, also make sure that you get stable, compatible components, nothing more frusterating than not having drivers or IRQ conflicts
