I think you can find a nice deal for a 50x CD-ROM drive here on these forums. As for the graphics card, why not go for a GeForce2 MX card instead? They're provide very nice graphics for a cheap price.

As for everything else, <shrug> look here in the forums. You can get really great deals without paying so much.

Good luck.

Well, how about a smaller hard drive, say a Maxtor 20GB 7200RPM for about $123, and comes with the ATA-66 cable. However, I recommend you do not get the BE6-II with the HighPoint 366 controller, it has well known problems with Maxtor and other drives. How about a BX133-RAID for $112? Maybe replace the CL GeForce 2 GTS for a GeForce MX for $87, that will save about $60 or more. It's going to be tough to fit in the CPU, a P3-700 is around $141 plus shipping.

Yeah I really have to think about whether or not to get the MX or the GTs. Is there that much of a difference? Also sorry but I kinda like stickin with the IBM's cos as far as I know its the best. About BE6-II I know it sucks, but the newer ones supposedly work and are pretty good... but too bad mine licks.

The difference is at higher resolutions or 32bit color past 1024, that's where the GTS kicks in. I don't disagree with you about the IBM drives, but you wanted to stay in budget and you didn't even have a CPU yet! My point was to get a smaller HD (even an IBM if you can find it for less $) so you would have some cash left over for a decent CPU. I have a BE6-II and the only thing I don't like about it is the HighPoint 366 controller.

Just my 2 cents :)

Hi,

You can get the IBM 75GXP 45g at buy.com for $168 use the $30 off $150 coupon to get it for $138.

Or if you can spare 15G, then get the IBM 75GXP 30g (Retail) for $157, use the $30 off $150... drive and cable $127.00.

Either way you'll save a few bucks

OverclockMe, dude you say you want a system for $500. Yet you go on:

<< Yeah I really have to think about whether or not to get the MX or the GTs. Is there that much of a difference? Also sorry but I kinda like stickin with the IBM's cos as far as I know its the best. >>

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that 3/5's of your system on 2 components is NOT going to work.

That leaves $200, for motherboard, cpu, case, soundcard, modem, speakers, monitor, cd-rom, ram, floppy, cables, os, ect.

WAKE UP.

Your only chance to stay on budget, is celeron, with an i810 mobo (integrated sound, and video). And I don't even know if that will cut it. You may have to get an emachine.
