Building a file server

I will soon be attempting to build my first file server. I was wondering if anyone could give me maybe a parts list of what they are running so I could get an idea of what I need. Thanks for any and all help.

I built one 3 years ago for an advertising office, used by 3 or 4 people all day. Used a Duron 800 with 512mb ram. Always served the need. Has a kb and a 14" monitor velcroed on the top, sitting in a utility closet. Has a cd burner in it and Nero, does auto, incremental backups for off site storage.

That is what I was wondering. I'm thinking of running a Celly 733 w/ 512 meg RAM and 2 - 250 gig hard drives.

Try running FreeNAS. It might give better features than your standard windows installation. It should also be less demanding than your linux installation.

It should do fine for a low traffic file server.
